I have a daughter who just celebrated her 10th birthday. She made a song list for a CD she wanted me to burn for her party and their many dance contests they had that night. Here's the list:

"Don't Cha" - Pussy Cat Dolls
"Fergalicious" - Fergie
"She wants to move" - NERD
"Roses" - Outkast
"Don't Phunk with my heart" - Plack Eyed Peas
"Gold Digger" - Kanye
"Show me what you got" - JayZ
"Come Back To Me" Vanessa Hudgens
"My Humps" Black Eyed Peas
"Wind It Up" Gwen Stefani
"Walk Away" Kelly Clarkson
"London Bridge" - Fergie
"Permiscuous Girl" Nelly Furtado

We don't approve of 90% of those songs, but seeing that it was for her slumber party, I went ahead and made the CD.

My 11 and 14 year old boys, on the the other hand, like this kind of stuff: Taking Back Sunday, Sum 41, Panic at the Disco, My Chemical Romance, Fall Out Boy, Blink 182, All American Rejects.

Dancelot, your kids are listening to some great stuff. I don't have any kids (thank God) but I do have four nephews, ages 14, 13, 8, and 8. My two sisters had two boys each.

All of them listen to that slow boring shit hop that's all over the radio these days such as Nelly, Chingy, 50 Cent, etc. However, the youngest boy surprised me one night. I had previously made my sister and her husband three Isley Brothers CDs, two fast CDs and one slow jam CD. Last Christmas my nephews were all together and they were fighting over their CDs. The youngest one snatched the remote control from his cousin's hand and said...."That junk is boring, I want to hear The Isley Brothers!". My whole family fell out laughing and my sister said "He ain't never lying.". Unfortunately, he's real young so I'm sure he'll grow out of it.

cool. hehe, my boy also enjoys the Pussycat Dolls, whenever the Buttons video was on he was like eek

I also did some CD compilations for him in the past, mainly based on songs he knew from movies like Shrek, A Sharks Tale, Scooby Doo etc. ...and I also included several funk originals that we heard performed by a local Soul & Funk cover band at a concert festival which he enjoyed very much... a few other tracks he heard either from mommy, his aunt, on the radio or wherever... here's some tracklisting... pretty patchy, but with a few exceptions I can live with that smile

Play that funky music - Wild Cherry
Super Freak - Rick James
Getaway - Earth Wind & Fire
I Got You, Sex Machine, Cold Sweat - James Brown
Elena Paparizou - My Number one
Living on a Prayer, You Give Love A Bad Name - Bon Jovi
Living La Vida Loca - Eddie Murphy & Antonio Banderas
Shining Star - Earth Wind & Fire
Ladies Night - Kool & The Gang
Got To Be Real - Cheryl Lynn
Brick House - Commodores
Car Wash - Rose Royce
Funky Town - Lipps Inc.
Holding Out For A Hero - Jennifer Saunders
U Can't touch this - MC Hammer
he still prefers this over Superfreak, oh well... confused smile
I Can't Help Myself - Four Tops
Burning Love, Stuck on You - Elvis Peresley
Walk this way - Run DMC
Funky Cold Medina - Tone Loc
Wild Thing - Tone Loc
O.P.P - Naughty by Nature
Paid In Full - Eric B & Rakim
Me Myself & I - De La Soul
Bust A Move - Young MC
Rappers Delight - Sugarhill Gang

not necessarily. my musical tastes as a grown up were almost entirely shaped by compilation tapes I recieved from my uncle when I was young.. he was foremost a Jazz fan, but he always enjoyed Soul and Funk as well... he was the first person to introduce me to the likes of Earth Wind & Fire, Stevie Wonder, Chic, Chaka Khan, Quincy Jones, Zapp, One Way, Switch... hell I think even Michael Jackson I first heard on one of his tapes... oh shit, and I almost forgot... "Controversy" was the first Prince track that ever caught my atttention, this was also on one of his compilations woot!

without him I'd probably be stuck with Beatles and ELO forever lol (okay, still respect those in some way, but my priorities kinda shifted...)

What are my kids listening now - weekend update:

yesterday my son grabbed my MP3-player to check out some new music, cause he was bored. I warned him he probably won't enjoy what's on there... but he took it anyway and catched the following:

Dazz - Brick
Holy Ghost - Bar Kays
Hollywood Swingin - Kool & The Gang
Rock with you - Michael Jackson
Insurance Man For The Funk - Bernie Worrell
Kiss - Prince
(one of his favorite songs at the moment)

he skipped however tracks by En Vogue and Al Green... okay, he's not really into slowies and romantic sounds yet lol

The two most popular albums of last year (according to Billboard's stats, which measures from Nov to Nov, Carrie's is the most popular disc of the year and everyone else who counts the calendar year says "High School Musical), even though I don't think I've heard anything from either!

HOW CAN YOU LET YOU 10 YEAR OLD CHILD LISTEN TO THAT CRAP... do you know your rottening her brain...
dont be surprised if she is having sex by the age of 12 or 14.... that music isnt good for kids to listen to...
and thankfully i had a decent family and mom.. and I WAS NEVER ALLOWED TO LISTEN TO that crap... i didnt even listen to the radio until i was almost 13 or 14...

STOP LETTING YOUR CHILD LISTEN TO THAT MUSIC... let children be pure.. and stop taking their innocence away from them....

just reading those list of songs.. make me VERY ANGRY.. that anyone could let a 10 year old child listen to that...

and then people wonder why kids are having sex at a young age.. and why everyone is so corrupt...

that music teaches kids NOTHING BUT DISRESPECTING THEMSELVES...

PARENTS TODAY ARE SO IRRESPONSIBLE...

I dont care if anyone takes offense because of what i said... because if your letting your children listen to that music.. you should feel ashamed... IM JUST SPEAKING THE TRUTH

Unfortunately, that looks like my daughter's playlist but she just turned 18 so there's nothing I can do about it. As she was growing up I exposed her to vasts amounts of diverse music including everything from Prince to Frank Sinatra...from Smokey Robinson and The Miracles to Simon and Garfunkel but we live in the age where there's no accounting for talent or good music. All that matters is hype and record sales! With that in mind, that kind of playlist probably gets more spins than a Las Vegas roulette wheel.

If you want to be pissed at someone for this decline in music. Start with the folks that make the most money as a result of this trend!
