Nah- it's little more than a thesis statement. Probably my number 9 or 10 on the album.

That's possibly the lamest music related comment I've heard from you yet!

Why? It's a decent song, but I really don't think it's anything spectacular like the other songs left! Maybe it's the "Like a Virgin" effect.

But to call it little more than a thesis statement makes it sound like generalized thematic crap.

That melody, those words, the character, the main guitar riff - artists go their whole careers without saying as much.

I'd give it an 8, so I think it's far from crap. I just think it is bettered by most of the other songs on the album, but it still gets a lot (most?) of the hype.

Fair enough.

To me, it just can't compete with the guttural warning of "Five Years", the tenderness of "Soul Love", the epic bewilderment of "Moonage Daydream", the majestic glory of "Starman", the frenzied furor of "Hang On to Yourself", the slutty glam icon of "Suffragette City" or the passionate outcry of "Rock 'n Roll Suicide".

Right now, "Five Years" looks to be the most in danger of getting the axe.

which I find puzzling and completely surprising. It's a perfect opener - manages to be both understated and dramatic. Crackers, I can still remember the first time I heard it, something I can't say about very many other songs.
