Z Cult Favorite/Funkadelic/Free Your Mind

For killin' antichrist's thread about Funkadelic's Standing On The Verge/America Eats, here is my offering to definately one of the top 5 greatest band to ever live on this planet, Parliament/Funkadelic. This is mainly a tribute to perhaps my all time fave song by Funkadelic, which is the cut "Free Your Mind And Your Ass Will Follow". Man, from the beautiful black psychedelia intro to the very end, this very song has it all. The music is wild and hard as hell. As rock as it is, and the same moment, it's as funky. I'm somewhat hesitant to even start talking about Hazel's playing because I'm afraid I might not stop talking about him. I'll just say his playing is fantastic. George's vocals sound like a brother on the street corner, high as hell, wandering in the traffic, about to get lit up and knocked to kingdom come by cars. Vision Hamburger Pimp in Dolomite staggering down the street but way more wicked. The one thing that I dig about Hazel's playing on this track is that as much as he owes much to Hendrix, he also gives a nod to Page's lead work on "Dazed and Confused" during much of his leads on "Free Your". When anyone who is not hip to Funkadelic ask me what should they check out, I always say this song first. It embodies much of what early Funkadelic was about; Hella talented brothers who were forging ahead with the funk/rock that Hendrix and Sly had championed but threw a wildness and spooky ass edge on top of it that really made it their own. Who can testify about this masterpiece of a song from a masterpiece of an album?

One of the many things that I adore about Funkadelic was that they could rock just as hard and often times harder than the British bands, i.e., Zepp, and one of my all time faves, early Black Sabbath. Sabbath to me, were the kings of the off the hook riff; Iron Man, (hell, damn near everything off of the Paronoid album) to the bangin' "Sweet Leaf". But Funkadelic and Parliament, even though they had the same amount of zeil when it came to the riffs, their riffs threw into it what the British cats didn't have; spiritual soul.

Just to name a few of some silly ass riffs that will always give someone whiplash. The only other band that could come close to hangin' with Funkadelic with this type of black rock was The Ohio Players. The riffs from "Fire" and "What The Hell" alone tells the tale.

Brutha B what I can I add to this that you already haven't? wink Great pick. I've always put "Free Your Mind" right up there with "Axis", "Zep 2" and "Sabbath Bloody Sabbath". It's THAT heavy.

..and "Hamburger Pimp" is a great example of the state of mind George was in at that time (and still is). Could you imagine if Funkadelic did a Dolemite soundtrack back then??

Hell yeah, I can imagine it. That shit would have been so coldblooded.

Man Black, you left no stone unturned. You hit some major, major points ( I had to back up off it, and put my cup down!). Without boring the other readers (I'm fairly new posting here, but not new to the game), there should be a place "heads" like ourselfs can rap. I'll make a few bullet points, then maybe in time we'll hit each one. My man you just served up a plate of Gold, gonna take a while to properly digest it.

As far as Zep is concerned, I've read other post about the Group, and I could post just as much info, but I hate to be redundant, so I normally just play my position. The earliest influence I received other than Hendrix, was Led Zepplin and the Beatles....yea I know eek "Dazed and Confused" is was and always will be my favorite track by them, and I have nothing but mad respect for JP. I know there are people here far more knowledgable of these groups than I, but I dug them as well.

As far as the Ohio Players I got your point. Eddie could be as controlled as the "Fire/Qualify and Satisfy" riff, but in the same light could be as syrupy as "Physical Love/Far East Mississippi. I will not bore the readers with my "commentary" but Dude is one of those cats that you couldn't put one sticker on, there were too many emotional Aves he took the listener down. If you named it, EH had a riff/solo to make you feel it. We all know EH's sig is "Maggot Brain" but I'll give you a key, loop "Lampoc Boogie" a few times at a nice volume, and watch where it takes you (Be careful).

And although Hendrix came up with that "Electric Church" moniker, IMO, that's what Funkadelic really is.....Dangerous if you didn't respect, but ever so enlightning if you understood it and knew that it would take you places

Great Post!
