The Police to reunite for Grammy Awards

NEW YORK - The Police will reunite to open the 49th Annual Grammy Awards in Los Angeles on Feb. 11, The Recording Academy said Tuesday, fueling speculation that the hit 1980s British band is planning a reunion tour.

The five-time Grammy-winning band, led by frontman Sting, with Stewart Copeland and Andy Summers, split up in 1984 and was last seen playing together in 2003 to commemorate their induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

The band, known for such hits as “Roxanne,” “Message in a Bottle” and “Every Breath You Take,” has never performed at the annual telecast for the music industry’s most prestigious awards that are given by The Recording Academy.

“The Police join a stellar list of past Grammy Awards opening acts, which includes reunions and once-in-a-lifetime performances,” said a statement from the academy.

Members of The Police have so far refused to confirm rumors that the band is planning to reunite in 2007 for dates in Britain and the United States, with this year marking the 30th anniversary of the release of “Roxanne.”

Last month the band’s label A&M Records, which is owned by Universal Music, said in a statement that they would mark the year somehow.

“It is our intention to mark the anniversary by doing something special with the band’s catalog of songs. Needless to say, everyone is hopeful the band will support our plans and while early discussions have taken place, nothing has been decided,” said the statement.

Other presenters at the Grammy Awards include Justin Timberlake, Beyonce, Mary J. Blige, the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Christina Aguilera, Melissa Etheridge and Stevie Wonder.

Amen. Watched BBC Live on Vh1 classic from 1979. Copeland, as I have said here before, is so musical, there may be better technical drummers (Vinnie Coliauta & Bozzio come to mind) but for the song he just nails it everytime especially live.

This really could be the show of my lifetime if egos and fights don't derail it.

The Grammys must be secretly trying to get me to end my longstanding boycott. Prince opening in '04, the Funk tribute in '05, Sly (I'll take any Sly I can get) gigging in '06, and now The Police in '07? I've got a reason to watch the Grammys for the 4th time straight.

And let's face it . . . I and other Police fans will watch (at least in part) to see whether it's a train wreck . . . or whether it's bliss.

And the grammies are stressing reunion(s) the plural, who else do they have up their sleeve? I know they have a Beyonce duet with Shakira in the plan, hopefully while Beyonce is wailing a note Shakira gives her a hip and knocks right into the audience, now that would be a great grammy show. As for the Police, im anxious, but I know Sting to well, this is a one time deal, already the reunion rumours are shot down, especially with Van Halens disaster on the way, and dont get me wrong i dont mind reunions, but Van Halen is a dead issue at this point, now its Eddie, his son,his brother and dave, and in two weeks it will be Eddie, his son,his brother and taylor hicks.
