Roberta Flack, Anybody?

It bothers me that she's not mentioned in the same breath as Aretha, Chaka, Gladys and Patti or even Diana. There's NO talk about her whatsoever, now why is that?

There's a bio-segment about her in this book which is REALLY insightful, if anybody's intrested

Any Roberta Flack fans?

She has a beautiful voice and i like her songs, it`s just that much of her material is a little TOO slow.

My favorite is the wonderful "Don`t make me wait too long", one of the duets with Donny Hathaway. I don`t have any of their duet albums hmmm

If I ever did the top 10 thing (I can never manage to do those anymore), she'd be in there somewhere. Her voice pairs so well with her style of music and playing. Of course, her songs with Donny Hathaway are the stuff of legend. I even loved her as a kid, but then it was more because she was from my home state of North Carolina. My two faves from her:

and

I can't listen to Jesse without almost tearing up.

I love Roberta Flack. Maybe some don’t consider her soulful because she doesn’t belt or scream the way some people equate with soul music or R&B but I could listen to her any day. I knew a lot of ‘early’ RF or at least I thought I did until one day a friend popped in one of her first or second albums ever and I didn’t even know it was her—it was so smooth almost folk-like. I was hooked.

I've never seen her in concert but I did see her perform a song at Phyllis Hyman's memorial and it was both beautiful and heart-breaking.

and I sampled
"Sunday & Sister Jones"
on a song I did
"be who you are and say what you feel
because those who mind don't matter
and those who matter don't mind."

Another thing that puzzles me.....

Whateva happend to her Bessie Smith Bio-pic she was planning to do in the mid-70's? Anybody still remember that? Dave?

There was a BIG deal back then about this project, which was "supposed" to be a follow-up to Diana's 'Lady Sings The Bluse'.

Speaking of another North Carolina native, Miss Nina Simone. It was reported that she had this "phobia" against Roberta Flack, making threats to Atlantic Records that she'd "bomb" their offices if they kept releasing her albums lol

Again, thats WHY I suggest you to check that book. You won't be sorry nod Diane, Natalie, Chaka, Aretha, Gladys, Patti, Millie, Esther,,,each of them have a chapter dedicated for their bios.

The book should be bought for Millie and Esther's chapters alone,,,you won't have a dull moment hearing those ladies through their "words" in the book nod

Chaka's part was informative about her beef with Rufus MORE than her book which only scratched the surface.

Haven't read Natalie's book, but her chapter was pretty insightful and intresting to me too nod

Of course, Roberta's chapter was REALLY really informative esp when you put the lack of access to her bios into consideration. For example on a personal light, I never knew that Roberta has a fiery temper, but then again, considering that she is a moody artist, it didn't took me by suprice.

So, you have an access to the book? wink

Well good then, coz its out-of-print currently and the ONLY place you buy it is from David Nathan's website.

Have to tell you though, haven't read Dionne's chapter.
