the CLOSEST yet BEST Prince imitator UPDATED for the sticklers

Of all his subsequent imitators, who would you consider the best without blatant rip-offs and the most
originality?

MAXWELL
D'ANGELO
VAN HUNT
TERENCE TRENT DARBY
LENNY KRAVITZ

My choice: TTD

D Angelo of course...very talented, very charismatic, very funky, very soulful yet knows how to play Rock guitar, very much a true Prince fan without being a copycat and he really knows his bootleg collection lol , and he´s great live ....saw him once in 2000 during the Voodoo tour.

I wouldn´t call him an imitator though.

Where is Maxwell's name on this list?

I personally never saw why D'Angelo or Maxwell have received so much love and they are so acclaimed for their so-called "originality." Of the two, Maxwell's style is more palatable to me but you can listen to some of his songs and it's pretty obvious he's channeling Prince. As for D'Angelo, he always sounded like some cross between Chuckii Booker (who at times tried to sound like Price) and Prince.

THE TRAFFIC JAMMERS, The Org's house band: VAINANDY -- lead singer; NAJEE -- bass; THE AUDIENCE -- guitar; PHUNKDADDY -- rhythm guitar; ALEX de PARIS -- keyboards; Da PRETTYMAN -- keyboards; FUNKENSTEIN -- drums. HOLD ON TO YOUR DRAWERS!

My favourite artist of them is by far TTD/Sananda and he is so not a Prince imitator disbelief. I also like D'Angelo and Van Hunt. Lenny and Seal are okay, but nothing more, neither on record nor live. But they both have some songs I really like. But none of all these artists is a Prince imitator, so I wonder why I even care to post on that thread neutral .

I always thought Terrence Trent D'Arby was more of a Michael Jackson wannabe and than a Prince imitator, but that's me.

Lenny Kravitz? Possibly in certain segments of Prince's forays into rock in the latter 1980s there are similarities, but Kravitz wasn't trying to imitate Price as much as Prince changed his style to where they mirrored each other.

Hell, the biggest Prince imitator may have been his former bandmate and childhood friend, Andre Cymone. Look at the video for "The Dance Electric" and he's looking like the missing link between Prince and Morris Day.

hmmm

They all have their own style independent of Prince. He has influenced many artists just like James Brown influenced him.

Anyway, my favorite of these is D'Angelo. "Untitled (How Does It Feel)" is the perfect Prince tribute. After D, TTD would be next. I love Van's output so far while Lenny and Seal have been pretty hit or miss IMO.

How in the world is Seal even on this list? I don't think I've ever heard anything he's done that sounds remotely like Prince. He's a whole other kind of music. Ciara's newest song and Justin's new cd are closer Prince imitations than Seal.

I was thinking the same thing regarding Seal. The creator of the thread should have listed Maxwell's name.

"very soulful yet knows how to play Rock Guitar".

..where has D'angelo ever played rock guitar or guitar for that matter? Never heard him play a solo like P or Lenny. Whatever happened to Nicole Renee?

I didn´t say that he does, I said he knows how to ...that´s a difference.

He does for sure know how to play Rock guitar, and he´s not afraid of covering She´s Always In My Hair and other great songs by other artists without turning them into a parody. The only cover he did that wasn´t really my thing was his remake of My Precious Love ( Marvin Gaye ) with Erykah Badu. Other than that, his covers are quite exciting. But you´re right, he is definitely not well known for Rock guitar licks.

I personally think TTD blows all those other imitators out of the water when it comes to singing. That guy can seriously blow!

Overall, I'd keep TTD, D'Angelo and Van Hunt. Not big on Messrs Kravitz and Maxwell at all. Seal isn't really along the same lines.

I might say D'Angelo, but he just takes too damn long to make an album!

I might say TTD embodies many of the same qualities that Prince has (even the bad ones) without being an outright imitation

Lenny has the talent, success & track record, but not the originality or creativity.

Haven't heard much Van Hunt

I also might throw Beck in that group.
