your top ten greatest hip hop artists.

Ok, here goes:
Pete Rock and Cl Smooth
EPMD
Stetsasonic
NWA
Geto Boys
Eric B. and Rakim
Public Enemy
De La Soul
A Tribe Called Quest
Doug E Fresh and the Get Fresh Crew

Ranking 'em would be too hard but if I had to pick a number 1, I'd have to go with Rakim.

I'll give this a shot. Could be subject to change...

10. Nas - Jay-Z had him pegged with the "one hot album" line, but when the album is as hot as "Illmatic," who cares?

9. Wu-Tang Clan - This is kind of cheating, I guess. Ghostface has been the most consistent, Meth came out of the gate on fire, but my favorite solo album is still Raekwon's debut. The Wu released a lot of great albums and bonafide classics in a short period of time.

8. Eric B. & Rakim - It's sad they didn't keep going longer, because they were fire! Rakim is my favorite MC hands down. If you don't like Paid in Full, you don't like hip-hop. Don't Sweat the Technique is very underrated.

7. LL Cool J - Cool James made the ladies and fellas love him. He's a shadow of his former self, but he's done more than enough to be here. He may not want us to call it a comeback, but Mama Said Knock You Out was an emphatic return.

6. EPMD - One of hip-hop's first albums artists. Yeah, they had great singles, but the dynamic duo were known for making great records before most in the genre.

5. The Notorious B.I.G. - Two classic albums... Biggie was batting 1.000 when he died.

4. Black Star - I guess this is cheating as well. These two have almost single-handedly saved hip-hop for me in the last decade. Black Star, Black on Both Sides, and Quality are all five-star albums and The Beautiful Struggle isn't far behind.

3. A Tribe Called Quest - C'mon, it's Tribe.

2. Run-DMC - So many classics...

1. Public Enemy - Rakim had the best flow and Slick Rick had the best voice, but Chuck D had the most power. He raps and you listen. Flavor Flav is, well, an acquired taste, but Chuck made this odd couple work through what seemed to be sheer force of will.

Damn, that was hard! Honorable Mentions: BDP, De La Soul, Digital Underground, Digable Planets, Ice Cube, Jay-Z, Kool Moe Dee, Outkast, Nice & Smooth, MC Lyte, and Pete Rock & C.L. Smooth.
