since there's a lot of Mellow threads on here... Ok, now this is a guy who....well, the mere mention of his name could start fistfights in some quarters... I'm a fan, but I realize that some people hear that voice, and wanna grab an Ak47, . I gotta admit that when I first heard it, as a kid, I was like, "What the f*ck?".... ... Of course, It grew on me, and now I got all his shit, It was really the music and lyrics that first won me over(Rainy Night In Tokyo was one of the ones that first that got me, along with Sunday Morning Here With You)... and his albums were always all-star player affairs, ala Steely Dan. Just some of the artists: Luther Vandross, Joe Sample and The Crusaders, Walter Becker, Toots Thielemans, Patti Austin, Jeff Lorber, Marcus Miller, Brenda Russell, Bonnie Raitt, Ron Carter, Eric Benet, Astrud Gilberto, Bob James, Hamish Stuart, Larry Carlton, The Yellowjackets, Kenny Rankin, David Sanborn, Will Lee, Joshua Redman, Art Farmer, Victor Feldman, Steve Khan, Leon Pendarvis, Don Grolnick, Rob Mounsey, Greg Phillinganes, John Tropea, David Spinozza, Art Garfunkel, The Brecker Brothers, Carla Bley, Carol Kaye, Emuir Deodato, Chuck Rainey, Hiram Bullock, Jerry Hey, Flora Purim, Claus Ogerman, Steve Gadd, Rick Marotta, Bucky Pizzarelli, Paulinho Da Costa, Eliane Elias, Chris Hunter, Kenny Barron, Mike Mainieri, Eric Gale, Tom Scott, Nana Vasconcelos, Mark Egan, John Guerin, David Sancious, Jon Faddis, Bud Shank, Chuck Loeb, Sue Evans, Warren Bernhardt, Bob Mintzer, Eric Marienthal, Gil Goldstein, Jim Beard, Wendy Waldman... He makes great sounding records.
But when I see/hear his name, the first thing that pops into my head is Popsicle Toes & Your Secret's Safe With Me. tA Tribal Disorder http://www.soundclick.com...dID=182431 "Ya see, we're not interested in what you know...but what you are willing to learn. C'mon y'all." | |
