Larry Carlton Launches New Live CD "Larry Carlton with Special Guest Robben Ford"

2 of my favorite guitarists get together.
I've always thought that Robben Ford was an edgier version of the smooth singing guitar style Larry Carlton established.

Pics from the recording...

...in Tokyo, Japan (Jan. 21, 2007)

The rest of the band consisted of...

...his son Travis on bass, Toss Panos on drums and Jeff Babko on keys.

From the Larry Carlton website...

...I hope this is just a placeholder and not the actual cover.

Pics from the supposed cover...

...photo shoot.

Release date for Japan is the 31st of January on JVC Japan.
Such a shame that to record good music you have to go half way around the world.
But then again, you go where you're appreciated. And a trip to Japan ain't a bad deal.

Thanks for the info. There should be a lot of tasty playing to learn from.

Thanx.

Love Larry Carlton - "Kid Charlemagne" is one of my favorite solos, though in an interview, he stated that it was just another day at the job for him, nothing particularly memorable...

I've been studying his chord/melody approach to soloing. Brilliant stuff.

Here he is playing a strat: http://www.youtube.com/wa...wGHaKbnoL8

A great melodic player.
All the notes/phrases make sense.

A lot of my favorite playing from him appear on Steely Dan (Josie, Third World Man) and Crusader (Spiral, Nite Crawler) recordings.

Co-sign on the "Third World Man" solo. And "Maxine" from Donald Fagen's "The Nightfly" (The whole CD actually.) Is great.

Cool! Robben's always been one of my favorite guitar players.

I never focused on Larry outside of his Steely Dan work, but his solos are amazing. I recently tried to learn Kid Charlemagne, only to put it aside with the realization that my band would never be able to learn it.

Robben is like a more bluesy version of Larry, but their styles are very similar. Robben's always been underrated (or at least underknown) IMO.

These are a couple of my favorite Robben Ford albums...

...The Inside Story & Robben Ford & the Blue Line

The Inside Story could be considered the first Yellowjackets album (same personnel).

Roscoe Beck's bass technique on You Cut Me To The Bone (the Blue Line album) makes you think you're hearing a B-3 on the track, but there isn't.

I first heard him on Talk to Your Daughter

Unfortunately, the stuff I've heard at least, Robben's a better live musician. He plays well on record, no doubt, but his music isn't always up to his playing.

But I haven't yet heard the Yellowjacket's stuff, which is probably his prime. So basically it's like I'm critiquing Clapton based on his 80's output lol

A lot of Robben Ford's albums are really schizophrenic.

My fav cuts from Talk To Your Daughter:
Help The Poor
Ain't Got Nothin' But The Blues
Revelation
star star star star

I saw him live a few months ago with another great guitarist, Mike Landau.
