Sparkle vs Dreamgirls!

So I watched Sparkle this weekend and I saw Dreamgirls when it came out last month and aren't there a lot of similarities between these 2 films? I think Sparkle is grittier and less glitzy which I prefer. There's even a character called Effie as well. Sparkle wins this one for me hands down! Also, I thought Dreamgirls was good but all the hype over it turned me off.

One last thing, why the hell has Beyonce filmed another video for "listen"? I personally think it's because J. Hud is getting so much attention for her role that Bee had to step her game up. What do you guys think?

She vas so beautiful when she was younger, AND she could act. She should have starred in a movie like Diana Ross` "Mahogany" or Whitney Houston`s "The bodyguard"...

great post. Sparkle gets the edge because it was a motion picture first. Im suprised they havent made the remake yet. I wont say that ones better than the other because both stories needed to be told. Have to watch sparkle again!!!

It's Sparkle, not Sparkles. lol

And it's a bad movie. Great soundtrack but awfully boring movie.

haven't seen Sparkle but DAMN Dreamgirls has been such a RIDE biggrin

Hudson totally captured me.

Beyonce looked gorgeous (nothin' more lol )

Eddie was surprising

The lil girl (who played Hudson's daughter) was incredible at the final scene

Very pleasant watch indeed nod

And thats ONLY the movie.

You should've been there when the excitement over the musical was on its PEAK nod

It was a madhouse 80's cult figure, just like Mr.T and The Cosby show. Still a cult figure after all of these years.

My mother is a Dreamgirls freak lol so you know, I took this after her.

Whitney Houston bought the rights to 'Sparkle' and she was planning to produce a remake starring Aaliyah. After Aaliyah's death, there has been no more talk of a remake.

Ashanti was recruited to play the lead role. After Murder Inc. fell apart, the talks have stopped.

It would have been a great movie for herself, had it been in the late 80s....

I would say Sparkle, but Dreamgirls easily outdoes that movie for me. First of all, Sparkle is a cult classic today and it is one of my personal favorite rags to riches story, but Dreamgirls is more honest and raw plot-wise on how a girl group was able to crossover from a gritty, down-to-earth R&B trio to such a pop sensation. The story also talks about how white acts tried to cover R&B songs and transform those songs into sobby, pop tunes in the late 50s- to 1960's. Payola is also mentioned in the Dreamgirls film, on paying disc jockeys to play certain songs. So, Dreamgirls is better because it covers more ground and tells a story about a girl group struggling in a music business instead of Sparkle (although it's a classic).

"I thought the exterminator was here last week" lol

only flaw in Sparkle is that it
does get boring after Sister ____

IMHO I think Beyonce would
do "Sister" justice...

and we all know how saturating
Beyonce can get...
I just would have rathered seen her
play "Sister" than "Deena"
even though I still haven't
seen Dreamgirls yet

I like both movies too, so I won't make a choice AND I totally agree that there should be no remake. I'm so SICK of Hollywood screwing up everything with remakes!! I can't think of ONE that I thought was better than the original--more up-to-date for the younger crowd, but NEVER better! I hope they just leave Sparkle alone!

And, oh, for you real Sparkle fans (like I am)...if it hasn't already been mentioned, the DVD for Sparkle finally came out about 2 weeks ago and it also has a 5 song CD of Aretha's music from the movie. Very nice!!!
