It depends on what genre of music you're discussing. THE TRAFFIC JAMMERS, The Org's house band: VAINANDY -- lead singer; NAJEE -- bass; THE AUDIENCE -- guitar; PHUNKDADDY -- rhythm guitar; ALEX de PARIS -- keyboards; Da PRETTYMAN -- keyboards; FUNKENSTEIN -- drums. HOLD ON TO YOUR DRAWERS!

Some say the 80's were 2 commercial and everything was about the image,
not the music. I just love the 80's,it had so many genres, the charts were filled with all kind of music;pop,synth-funk,hair metal, new wave, soul. And even the pop bands/boy bands played an instrument and wrote their own songs!! Love4oneanother

As much as a lot of "fluff" came out of the 80's esp where new wave was concerned (a creative double edged sword), much of the material was really good. Prince, Madonna, MJ, Culture Club, Fleetwood Mac, Heart, Van Halen, Bruce Springsteen, Cure, Erasure, Depeche Mode, U2, Pet Shop Boys, Sugarcubes (which would give us Bjork) and many many other influential folks started and/or created some really classic Music during this time. A note that record labels were changing as well, but still revered those that sonded different or at least tried to. There were other important bands that came about too. Like Nitzer Ebb, Front 242, Severed Heads etc that kept up at the Industrail Dance music. THAT combined with the phenom of House music helped carry electronic music to the next level in the 90's.
I tend to think of the 90's as when music started getting really bad...and thus feel as though much of what came out of the 90's as being all sounding the same and way over rated (Oasis, Matchbox 20, Chumumbawumba, etc). Instant hits, Mega Stars, practically overnight that really brought nothing to the table. The influx of Made bands like the Spice Girls and NSync starting to creep in. And you pretty much had to sound like so and so to be in. While we did have a few pioneers like Beck, or Bjork nothing was on any level of genius or ground breaking. Christian Zombie Vampires

and the 70's, 60's... the 90s sucked My favorite decade for music was the 70s,but the 80s is close behind My favorite decade is neither the 70s or the 80s. My favorite is 1974-1984. A lot of the late 1980s were dull as hell but there were still a few jams around. The entire 90s were totally a bunch of bullshit...at least anything in the mainstream anyway.....except for maybe a little in the very early 90s up until maybe 1993 when the dance/house music was above ground for a little while. Other than that, the 90s were the dullest era in the whole century of the 1900s and the 2000s are even worse so far. Andy is a four letter word.

i much preferred the 90's. and the 70's, 60's... The 90's were a f***ing joke (mostly 94-99)! And beside, how can the 80's be overrated if this is the decade that the 90's & 2000's want it to be like (READ: sampling & beatbiting sounds)?

I do have to say for electronic music esp for music that was imported from Europe, the 1990's were an awesome time. Almost everything from Drum and Bass to Techno to Trance (and all the varieties therein) to Ambient ( the ORB). The 90's were great for remixes/ers as well. I do have to saty that many of my favorites from the 80's produced some of their better albums in the 90's. Pet SHop Boys, Depeche Mode, Madonna, Erasure, Nitzer Ebb.
Let's also not forget one of the Best Bands came out of the 90's.... Almost brought back 60's and 70's Psychedelic fashion (fused with a modern flair) by themselves. Not to mention Disco swiftly came back after these guys broke onto the scene. Maybe not a pioneer, nor did they really stay around long enough to make a big difference, but just by existing, things changed. [Edited 1/23/07 9:09am] Christian Zombie Vampires

I like some of the '80s, but I prefer the '60s and '70s, and the '90s (as far as mainstream breakthroughs go) gave us Soundgarden, Alice In Chains, the Smashing Pumpkins, Weezer, Faith No More, Radiohead, Tool, and much, much more.

Are you serious? The 80s has been about the most hated and mocked decade musically, and you're calling it overrated? Seriously?! Aside from my personal bias (the 80s is by far my favorite decade for music), there was a lot of creativity and innovation in the 80s. For every 90s hipster band you can namedrop, there are more than a few artists who did it before in the 80s. Feel free to join in the Prince Album Poll 2018! Let'a celebrate his legacy by counting down the most beloved Prince albums, as decided by you!

DigUBetterDead said: my bloody valentine I really don't have any great opinion one way or the other regarding overall quality of music, but I definitely think that there was a huge improvement in production and overall sound of recordings in the nineties, and Loveless was a big step forward, and a huge influence (for the better, I figure) on the sound of the decade. When I think of the eighties musically, I recall plastic, SAW-style productions - IE anything thesexofit has ever posted. Whatever other attributes the decade might have had, I'm grateful that a stake was put through the heart of that sound. [Edited 1/22/07 17:17pm]

The 80's didn't have the best genre's of music, but I once heard it described as a time when hits were cool. I'd kind of agree with this.
While I wouldn't buy albums by most of the popular artists of the 80's their hits were often good songs. That's something that distinguishes it from this decade, which is also very pop. [Edited 1/22/07 17:23pm] My Legacy
