I love his first 5 albums, my favorite being Circus and my second favorite probably being "5".

The last 2 albums (Lenny and Baptism) have not broken any new ground musically. I think he lost focus when his priorities shifted from music to fame. He became more about "look" and supermodels than the music.

Another downfall of Lenny's (throughout his ENTIRE career) is songwriting. The ideas are there, but he never graduated from Dr. Seuss-like rhymes.

All this aside, he is a favorite of mine and I am looking forward to the next CD.

Agreed on all counts...

He's a really pedestrian songwriter. Other than "Always On The Run," I can't think of a song of his I really consider to be well written, though I enjoy plenty of Lenny songs.

eh, he is what he is. The songs are a tad simplistic sometimes (esp the last 2 records) but I enjoy the shit out of so much of his stuff. Can't ask for more than that

He's a talented musician.

As an artist I'd say he's not very original or inspired, but with the competition nowadays he practically looks like a genius.

I don't know... I'd consider something like "It Ain't Over 'Til It's Over" to be sufficiently well written. I love that song.

He's been hit or miss over the years but I'm a fan. Hamster's suggestion of the B-Sides is right on. His best stuff is in the B-Sides IMO, the song "Accension" and "Brother" both off the Heaven Help single are just beautiful but I never hear them unless I push play.

Live he's seemed to come back down to earth too. The last time I saw him (W/Nikka Costa) he was less rock star and more musician.

Or maybe it's just because it was the first time I've seen him without sunglasses and he has a serious wandering eye. lol

To me, 5 was the shocker. I hardly ever play it and after it was never quite the same.

Kravitz was kewl on his first four albums. My fave is prob Mama Said, cuz it got both versions of Fields Of Joy and Circus.

Also check out this stuff;

star The album he wrote, produced and performed with Vanessa Paradis.

star The song he wrote for Brandy, Where Are You Now? on that Batman soundtrack (I wish they would do an entire album together, like the Paradis album; Brandy's voice is PERFECT for that kind of song)

star Of course, half of the magnificence of Justify My Love by Madonna is that beat. Adore it to bits.

star Is It Me Is It You, the R&R Is Dead b-side; amazing.

The beat from "Justify My Love" is a sample with minor modifications from Public Enemy's "It Takes A Nation Of Millions..." album. It's an instrumental track.

and the song is vaguely Prince connected in that Ingrid Chavez sued when they left her name off of the authorship of the lyrics... she won. It's very similar in concept to her stuff she did with Prince.

Actually, you probably have. "Romeo Blue" was his stage name, prior to releasing Let Love Rule. Originally, LLR was going to be released under that name, but he changed his mind shortly before its release and decided to use his birth name.

When Lenny first hit the scene with Lisa Bonet, he was always billed as "Romeo Blue". I can remember seeing the two of them host Friday Night Videos, and Lenny was using that name at the time.

KRAVITZ SUED AGAIN IN TOILET TUSSLE

Rocker LENNY KRAVITZ is being sued for the third time over a toilet that overflowed in the star's Manhattan, New York penthouse. Pacific Indemnity Insurance Company are suing the singer for $457,339 (GBP261,337) - the amount the firm says it paid policy-holder MARK VAN LITH for damages to his $2.87 (GBP1.64 million) apartment. The 2004 incident caused extensive damage to Van Lith's fourth-floor flat. The 41-year-old performer is now facing claims totaling $800,000 (GBP457,000) as a result of a leak in his sprawling Soho condominium. The rocker purchased the home in 2001 for $7.1 million (GBP4 million) and has put it on the market for $13 million (GBP7.4 million)

I always try to step up to the plate for ole brother Lenny. I've always liked the cat. He gets a bum rap basically cuz he's a brother that has flash and he wears his influences on his sleeve. His lyrics are his weakest department and no, he's not a blazing musician. But he's cool and a good live performer. I've seen him twice in different stages of his career.I don't think it was a wise move for him to even speak about a "funk" album. Usually whenever someone talks about doing something funky, it never ends up being funky. Point is, when you're funky, u ain't gotta talk about it. U just release whatever you're doing. Funk isn't really Kravitz's forte. He's done some things that were "funky" but a funk artist, he ain't. And it's nothing wrong with that. My vibe is that he maybe feels like folks don't think he can bring it and he's out to prove shit to people. Can't do that. Fuck what people may think anyway. As an artist, U have to be true to yourself, first and foremost. Let people dig what their going to dig. U have no control over that. Be yourself and be happy with that shit.

He kinda just blends.

I did like the "5" album and "Mama Said."

The words "Lenny Kravitz" and "breaking new ground musically" have no business sharing the same sentence. LOL. I like some of his stuff, he knows how to make make good records - a rarity these days, and I give him dapp for that, but everyone knows Lenny Kravitz is the most blatantly derivative artist of our time.
