I still love the emotion of Holliday's performance. When I first heard it, I thought she had gotten dumped by her boyfriend or something smile! I had no idea that it was from a play!

I was only 12 though...

Holliday. You can't recreate that. Hudson gives it a good shot tho.

The original is better, but J-Hud definitely does the update justice.

Holiday....

I made my daughter go on youtube so she could see Jennifer Holidays version. She was like...OMGOSH!

The young J.H does the song well though.....definitely.

Holliday over Hudson, although I have to admit I prefer Tamyra Gray's cover most of all

Jennifer Holliday

I saw the YouTube clip and the song just touched me.....I almost started crying. I wish I was old enough to have seen the play on Broadway.

Hudson's is very cool,
but no way does it compare to Holliday's.

It would be a duplicate compared to how Bouncy would have fucked it up lol

It's funny,
cuz I always thought this was one song that no one could ever match so why even try?
Hudson's version only works when viewed in the context of the film.
Whenever I hear the song on the radio,
I don't think it's bad,
but I do think to myself,
if I'm going to listen to it,
I wanna hear the amazing/Holliday version of it.

I think I was the only one in the theater when I saw Dreamgirls who had NEVER heard the Jennifer Holliday song before. I didn't even know Dreamgirls was old material, heh. I had never heard of it before. I thought it was all knew.

So I loved Jennifer Hudson in the film, and heard the original after the fact.

Comparing the two, I have to say Jennifer Holliday's is better... there is just something astonishing about it. Great heart and soul.

But Jennifer Hudson's is amazing as well... she MADE the movie.

I'm not a fan of "old Prince". I'm not a fan of "new Prince". I'm just a fan of Prince. Simple as that

Jennifer Hudson did it beautifully, but Jennifer Holliday's performance of that song is legend. Who said they prefer Tamyra Gray's cover over all others? hmm hammer

And it's HoLLiday. Two LL's lol

I said it, so put your hammer away (Maxwell?)! First of all, I'm in love with Tamyra, so that explains a lot of it. She also did it extremely well. Finally, while I think all three versions are great, I have to admit I've never been that fond of the song. IMO, it's always been more of a great performance or vocal showcase than a great song.

And it's HoLLiday. Two LL's lol

You'll notice I had it right. wink

Oh, you're talking about the song "And I'm Telling You, I'm Not Going". Jennifer Holliday by FAR. Jennifer does some screaming on that song and it sounds natural and unstaged. This new heffer sounds like she's singing in a white church.

I have to wonder if she intentionally toned it down out of respect? This girl can blow down, not quite like Jennifer but she blows Bouncy out of the water.

All these wenches sing that way these days....in those damn amateur "American Idol" sounding voices. There's no good screamers these days.
