Oh, you're talking about the song "And I'm Telling You, I'm Not Going". Jennifer Holliday by FAR. Jennifer does some screaming on that song and it sounds natural and unstaged. This new heffer sounds like she's singing in a white church.

I have to wonder if she intentionally toned it down out of respect? This girl can blow down, not quite like Jennifer but she blows Bouncy out of the water.

Its a toned down performance...you can't pull that sh*t on film (when its blown up on a huge screen and blasted out of massive speakers). if Hudson did what Holiday did on the big screen folks would have laughed at how funny it looked.

acting on a stage and on film are two totally different beasts. hudson accomplished, with subtly, the exact same thing Holliday did on stage with her force. the difference is, Holliday was allowed the luxury to get "huge" because she was singing to the folks at the last row of a huge theater.

Jennifer Hudson certainly does a servicable job, but Jennifer Holiday's version cannot b touched. It's 1 of the greatest per4mances in musical theatre history.

I see you got your old username back. I like it better. We need to convince David to take his back too. People become very well known with particular names. Just imagine if I changed my name. It would take a lot of hellraising for me to live up to the name Vain Andy. lol

well i love the original, but the remake is a very, very good try at it. I think Hudson did a subperb job, but i just can't say that Hudson's is necessarily better than Holliday's.....
I will forever love and miss you...my sweet Prince.

She's a literal monster with that song.

My vote goes to Holiday as well and thank god Beyonce didn't get to sing that song clapping lol
worship When I read that Bouncy wished she could have lost 20 pounds so she could have played Effie, I was like there is no way in hell she would do justice to that song.

My pick is Holliday. I have only heard Hudson sing it once and it'salmost a carbon copy of the original.

Hell, I had no choice but to hear J-Ho's version because that's all they played over the last 25 years. I have yet to meet someone that has never heard J-Ho's version. J-Hud just owned it from her. It happens. Ask Smokey about D'Angelo owning "Cruising." wink

Definitely Holliday. Hudson did a great job, but I agree that she almost copies what Holliday did. . .even the big breath at the end! You don't "own" a song when you copy it.

I think a good example of a singer taking a song and *really* making it theirs would be "Creepin". I'm not saying one is better than the other, but Luther really made it "his" song when he sang it--didn't copy Stevie's style at all.

Isn't that what a "cover" is? eek

No, I see what you mean, but she still pulled it out of her ass and she owned it, no matter how many similiarities there are between the 2 stylings.

No-- I think your *real* point is that this is your opinion and you're sticking by it! lol lol

Whatever. . .we all agree that Hudson did a good job. We disagree as to whose job was better. . .to each his/her own!

You're almost right - she said she was willing to gain twenty pounds. After she got the part of Deena, there were all sorts of unsubstantiated rumors that she was going to sing And I'm Telling You... Bill Condon wasn't havin' it, cuz he didn't want her in the part. He actually didn't her as Deena at first either. In fairness, he wasn't sold on Jennifer Hudson at first either.

Be-yaaawwwwnnn-ce would have made the song trashy if she would have sung it. glad somebody in Hollywoodland had enough sense to avoid that move.
