Great phrase and even better phrasing by Stevie. That's a moment in the song where Stevie has to slow it down for the build-up again. Stevie is so,..pissed off funky on this cut and in this section of the song. One of the silliest-stoopid fonky cuts ever committed to tape. Ever.

Everything about this cut is fonky. The music, the lyrics, the melody, Stevie's harmonies on the hook and throughout the whole song. The mix. That beautiful analog sound that no digital software can fuck with. Stevie's musicianship is so in the pocket,...his vocals are so in the pocket. Stevie went through a period where he sounded like he may have been a little crazy, and this is one of those periods. Brilliant axe work by Ray Parker. One of my all time fave songs by anyone here on this earth or elsewhere. The blueprint for all of Michael's "hee hee"s to Prince's song "Shockadelica". The ending to "Maybe Your Baby" is more Prince than Prince. That's how MUCH he adapted that into his sound. Parliament's "Flashlight" would have not existed if it weren't for this cut. "Fight the Power" and several other Isley jams would have simply not existed if it wasn't for this single song. Stevie laid down a once in a lifetime thing in this world and it was swept up by others like water running down stream. Stevie just doesn't get the props that he deserves when it comes to funk. "Maybe" has what I call that "funk drag" where it kinda sounds like it's too slow, but it's not. U can't teach that, ya'll. U can either play it or not. That's something u can't play unless u can feel it. Another example of a silly stoopid funk masterpiece that owes much to "Maybe" that also applies the "funk drag" is "More Bounce".

Yup! In fact Prince covered this tune live, performing it several times in '94 (Stevie came up onstage for one of the performances!).....

Man, I wish Stevie could revisit this sound once in a while....
