I honestly thought this was the best year in quite some time - from my perspective anyway...there were five or six albums that I loved unreservedly, and another dozen or so that I thought were good to almost great.

You're lucky. I haven't had a hugely rewarding year for new releases since '04.

when i saw the list of all the 2006 releases, i noticed a bunch of stuff i bought or checked out, but the overwhelming majority of what i heard in 2006 was underwhelming! and that includes releases from some artists i usually love, like prince and the band grandaddy. shrug

I'm expecting a much better year for '07. Almost every one of my favorites is releasing something or is at least rumored to be working on something new.

my expectations are a total blank slate this year.

i don't know if the underwhelmingness was indeed the result of a bum year in music (damo didn't seem to think so!) or if it was just me getting older, or if it was where my head was last year, or a combo of all of the above. there WAS stuff i flipped out over, and there was music that grew on me. mostly, though, there was just a bunch of stuff i heard that was pleasant enough, but i'd listen, say "that was nice", then tuck it away never to listen to it again. sigh

Over the past couple years, I've bought way more reissues and box sets than new albums, probably for the same reasons you mentioned.

I agree. I was actually able to make a top 20 list for 2006. I've never been able to make one that deep since I started making year-end lists in 1992.

I bought about forty 2006 CDs not including reissues. The albums I would like to rave about hardly ever goes on anyone's list (or rate your music rolleyes), but Moonbeam's annual thread is my chance.

2006 was kind of a blur to me, there were a few good things here and there, and i was able to compile 10 top albums, but i realized that some of the albums towards the bottom would have never made it to any other years list this decade, with the exception of 2005. 2005, for me was pretty bad but was saved at the end by a-Ha's "analogue" which saved a whole year for me. Their were some really good compilations this year, and a few good live albums, including 12 Gardens by Billy Joel the best live album i have ever heard, but i didnt include that in my list since it wouldnt be fair. But its really about the timing and the artists coming out, back in 2000, u2,a-ha,duran,bon jovi and others all were in my top 10 and all could have been 1 if possible. Though i will listen to everyone, i try not to get into artists when i know they arent going to be around for a second or third album, to me Longevity is most important, the beauty is to be able to follow someone and watch them progress, there really arent any new artists that i can see getting to a point where they have 5 albums out.

For the second year running, I'd like to see what the org hails as the top albums of the year. Last year's version was quite successful and I hope this year sees the same enthusiasm.

Every year, a buttload of critics are polled and the results form an exhaustive conglomerate list of the top albums of the year. Here is the result of the 2005 Pazz & Jop. It's interesting to compare it to the results of our own poll.
Here are the rules.

  • You have 100 total points to distribute among 10 albums from 2006.
  • The maximum an album can receive is 30 points.
  • The minimum an album can receive is 5 points.
  • Ties are broken by the total number of ballots per album.
  • Compilations are ineligible for inclusion.
  • *Album must be from 2006*.

*I'll have to be a bit flexible about this as albums can be released at different times in different years.

I'll use my ballot as an example.

1. Prince- 3121 (23)
2. The Strokes- First Impressions of Earth (14)
3. Janet Jackson- 20 Y.O. (12)
4. Morrissey- Ringleader of the Tormentors (9)
5. Yeah Yeah Yeahs- Show Your Bones (9)
6. Peaches- Impeach My Bush (8)
7. My Chemical Romance- The Black Parade (8)
8. Gnarls Barkley- St. Elsewhere (6)
9. The Rapture- Pieces of the People We Love (6)
10. Tiga- Sexor (5)

It may be more fun if the ballots are kept secret until the end. If you want to contribute, send me an orgNote with your picks and they will be posted after the results are finalized. Post on this thread to say that you contributed, but don't post your list here!

after all, even pitchfork named JT's song as single of the year!

nod agreed! not that Janet's was terrible because it was certainly a decent, imperfect record, it's just Gnarls Barkley's St. Elsewhere was just more jaw-dropping and innovative.
