Official 2006 Albums of the Year: Pazz 'n Jop Thread

For the second year running, I'd like to see what the org hails as the top albums of the year. Last year's version was quite successful and I hope this year sees the same enthusiasm.

Every year, a buttload of critics are polled and the results form an exhaustive conglomerate list of the top albums of the year. Here is the result of the 2005 Pazz & Jop. It's interesting to compare it to the results of our own poll.
Here are the rules.

  • You have 100 total points to distribute among 10 albums from 2006.
  • The maximum an album can receive is 30 points.
  • The minimum an album can receive is 5 points.
  • Ties are broken by the total number of ballots per album.
  • Compilations are ineligible for inclusion.
  • *Album must be from 2006*.

*I'll have to be a bit flexible about this as albums can be released at different times in different years.

I'll use my ballot as an example.

1. Prince- 3121 (23)
2. The Strokes- First Impressions of Earth (14)
3. Janet Jackson- 20 Y.O. (12)
4. Morrissey- Ringleader of the Tormentors (9)
5. Yeah Yeah Yeahs- Show Your Bones (9)
6. Peaches- Impeach My Bush (8)
7. My Chemical Romance- The Black Parade (8)
8. Gnarls Barkley- St. Elsewhere (6)
9. The Rapture- Pieces of the People We Love (6)
10. Tiga- Sexor (5)

It may be more fun if the ballots are kept secret until the end. If you want to contribute, send me an orgNote with your picks and they will be posted after the results are finalized. Post on this thread to say that you contributed, but don't post your list here!

ugh

i can't even figure out what came out this year, let alone what i listened to.

is there some kind of semi-sorta-comprehensive list of 2006 releases i can use as a reference?

i know that's kind of a ridiculous question, but maybe someone has a decent idea. shrug

must you rate 10 albums? can one give thirty points to three albums and ten points to a fourth and leave it at that?

it's not my contest but I think that would get shot down as unfairly weighting your selections.

At the least I think you would be expected to allot 5 points each to the slots you didn't use - IE if you only selected 4 albums, you'd only be able to give them a total of 70 points (100-(6*5)).

yeah, I wasn't planning on distributing points that way, but it was unclear if you can.

I don't think I even bought 10 new albums last year. It was a dry spell.

when i saw the list of all the 2006 releases, i noticed a bunch of stuff i bought or checked out, but the overwhelming majority of what i heard in 2006 was underwhelming! and that includes releases from some artists i usually love, like prince and the band grandaddy. shrug

I'm expecting a much better year for '07. Almost every one of my favorites is releasing something or is at least rumored to be working on something new.
