damosuzuki said: fair enough. I think of them as prog, but at the least they and the other somewhat like-minded bands of their era comprise a highly distinct subset that didn't have a lot to do with Emerson Lake and Palmer.
I think that Ian might dig 'em simply because they aren't as academic or serious or conceptual as a lot of prog bands. Their music is truly fun and colorful, and I'm guessing that he'd pick up on that.

Maybe I don't like Pink Floyd because I've never done drugs.
In any case, Can does sound intriguing. Feel free to join in the Prince Album Poll 2018! Let'a celebrate his legacy by counting down the most beloved Prince albums, as decided by you!

And leave Pink Floyd alone! I swear, if I hear the words pretentious in the same sentence as Pink Floyd just ONE more time.... Think of a new one. Next thing you know someone will come on here and call Beck a "pastiche artist" or something. I don't think any music is pretentious actually. I can't think of anything I would consider to be that way. It's an overused term IMO. Just like "brilliant" is so played out that I can't even bring myself to use it any more relating to music because it's lost it's whole meaning and power for me. Anyway, I was never really a big fan of the original version of that song anyway, but I do love Pink Floyd, and Dave Gilmour's playing in particular. I'm not a fan at all, but I do think it's very appealing music - pleasant melodies, nice guitar tone, easy to drift off to when you're in a haze, drug-induced or not. I'd sooner relax to floyd than the orb or any of those other ambient bands who were popular for five minutes or so in the nineties.

I guess I don't think of Can as prog though, and that might help Mooners appreciate them. I think of them as more avant garde art junk funk. How can anyone not love that? Is that an actual category?

Big, big fan of Can here, that album in particular, and I love that Silver Apples record as well. I've almost picked up that Aphrodite's Child album a few times. They've had a few copies sitting in the prog section of my local indie shop for a while. I think you've just prodded me into taking the plunge on it. Do it...but, as a warning, it can be slightly wacky at times...although, it has its place.
