I think Pink Floyd just gets the brunt of it since they were the most successful. hmmm

That’s what I’d say too. Pink Floyd could be a touch bloated and pompous at times, but they were far from the worst offender – in fact they were the most down-to-earth, accessible and melodic prog band that I can think of. It basically just happened that they were the most commercially successful band of that type, and so they were the ones to bear the brunt of the antagonism when the punks and new wavers needed someone to rag on.

I find Pink Floyd to be down to earth and accesible period. Someone not understanding them does not make them pretenious.

HOW DARE ANYBODY SLAG OFF PINK FLOYD!!

IT IS APAPARANT TO ME THAT YOU LOT CAN’T GET YOUR SIMPLE LITTLE MINDS AROUND ANYTHING THAT DOES NOT FOLLOW THE MORONIC FORMULA OF A 3 MINUTE POP SONG: VERSE, CHORUS, VERSE, CHORUS, MIDDLE 8, CHORUS.

I FEEL SORRY FOR YOU LOT.

I would like to point out that my rant is in no way intended to be derogatory against David Bowie, he too is a legend.

they're one of those bands who, every few years i think "ya know, i bet i'm missing out on a lot of cool music by not listening to pink floyd - i should give 'em another chance" - then i pick an album and start listening, then i remember why i don't listen to them.

one of these days i'll stop. shrug

They were good only when Syd Barrett was with them. After that they were straight up arena rock...but, I do have to give major props to David Gilmour for discovering Kate Bush...it's amazing that his great taste in music didn't carry over into his own band boxed

Oh, and as far as "Pin Ups" goes...that album can stand on its own...as a non-covers album, imho. It's THAT good. I love both versions of "See Emily Play", "I Can't Explain", etc...but, they're each strong enough to stand on their own....so it's hard to compare.

Wow! That's pretty harsh. Owning nearly every Pink Floyd album out there I should be offended, but Im not. To each his own and all. You are missinq out on one of the greatest living guitar players. David Gilmore can run the whole gambit of jazz-soul-rock-blues on the guitar. And Ive been told that being stoned really brings out the lyrics to a lot of their songs.

nod compared to ELP, Yes, Jethro Tull, I find them very accessible & simple. From Meddle to The Wall, they didn't really make a bad album.

Now they look a bit like dinosaurs, but it's the same with Aerosmith. At one time they were great.

Well, what else do you consider "arena rock"? hmmm The Who? The Eagles? Peter Frampton? Zeppelin? Ted Nugent? Aerosmith? ACDC? The Rolling Stones? etc. lol

lol Good point.
That was a bad descriptor...I should have said prog rock...but, then, I am not opposed to all of that either. I guess it just boils down to not being a fan post-Syd era. shrug

I am a pretentious music junkie....

Not to mention albums like Prince's "Crystal Ball The Final Configuration", it has classic historical pop moments, but I love the overblown pretentious "the studio is my playground" nature of the whole project. In CD format the triple album set ends up just 11 songs on each disc, it should have been release the way Prince wanted, blows SOTT out the water in my opinion. Hell They let Frank Zappa and George Harrison have a three record set

but anyway we got a bit off topic but yeah Floyd is the shit, David Gilmour has a very distinct guitar tone. bands these days don't experiment enough, that's how new things get created in the first place.

I totally agree. It seems that everyone just makes a copy these days of what sold the most the year (or even month lol ) before.

But I hear now that ringtones are selling the most, more than actual music. neutral Yippee!

That's a whole 'nother thread though.

Oh man... "666" by Aphrodite's Child...their one and only masterpiece (their other albums sucked...they sounded like late era-Pink Floyd giggle ) ...blessed by Salvador Dali himself...I had one copy, cracked, on vinyl, that still played and lasted until the mid-90s when it was finally released on CD.

I'll send you a copy!
