Arguably, Pink Floyd fits right into that category! Floyd are pretentious '70s prog (although I always find myself labelling them "classic rock"), but certainly not underground for all the millions of records they've sold, and I'll listen to them anyday over Genesis and Yes and Van der Graaf Generator and stuff like that.

I missed that one. Was that before or after "Don Juan's Reckless Daughter"?

I absolutely adore Yes. Sue me, but I think their best seventies records are some of the most astonishing and adventurous rock music ever recorded. I don't particularly enjoy the fact that 90% of their songs were about Yetis or eastern mysticism or whatever, but I can get past that. As for Pink Floyd, there's basically four eras of Pink Floyd, and I'd say yeah to the first two and nah to the last two.

I'm not an expert of PF's material (I just own some compilations from them and I have darkside in my hd), but after roger waters left, they lost their originality and became their own tribute band

Very Zappa that way. which i guess might explain their ability to collaborate? i think there was a pretention to zappa's work too, though it was balanced out with enough satire and absurdity that you accepted the noodlier/more indulgent stuff as part of the whole package...kinda like when prince does something totally garish and uncool, we don't care as long as he funks out or does a killer guitar solo at some point to make up for it.

I was just gonna say. I don't really call any band pretentious anyway, but if I HAD to pick some, I'd go with some real inaccessible 70s prog rock. "I saw a woman with major Hammer pants on the subway a few weeks ago and totally thought of you." - sextonseven

I like some fucked up shit that many may dub as pretentious (Velvet Underground, Roxy Music, etc.), but Pink Floyd panders and panders like no other, and I don't get any musical benefit by listening to it. Obviously others do, but I'm just not on board. But why must noodling = pretention? P eople still pay to see it. I'm sure they're something quite special in their own right, but I just can't get into them nor most other classic prog aside from PF. But A LOT of music that I adore now that I couldn't stomach long ago had its ways of growing on me, so maybe I'll give them another try one of these days.

I just think that Pink Floyd always get tagged with this, when if you listen to bands/artists like (as someone mentioned above) Genesis, Yes, Todd Rundgren, Zappa, Beefheart, Alan Parsons Project, Emerson Lake and Palmer, even Jeff Beck and David Byrne, well they're even "worse" as far as the over-indulgence goes IMO. I think Pink Floyd just gets the brunt of it since they were the most successful. "I saw a woman with major Hammer pants on the subway a few weeks ago and totally thought of you." - sextonseven
