While I wouldn't call her a full on clone (because she could actually sing), Karyn White was definitely pulling a Janet in that awful video for Secret Rendezvous. I had to misspell it to find it on youtube, BTW. One of the worst videos ever, but she's trying her hardest to be Janet.

The Way I Feel About You was one of few letovers from Janet's RN1814 album. Janet also did backing vocals with Karyn.
cool

The Way I Feel About You was also from Karyn's second album when she started working with Jam & Lewis. A lot of Janet's songs sound like SOS Band tunes. Maybe we can consider Janet an SOS Band clone? wink Any of the acts Jam & Lewis worked with around that time had a similar sound. I still don't see the comparison. Karyn can sing; Janet can whisper and request more rainstorms to be added between tracks.

And lets not forget The Human League! Human, Love Is All That Matter, & I Need You Lovin' sounds a lot like songs that even SOS bands would have had as hits too. lol lol lol

lol But they're all great tunes.

Their Web site is being upgraded but in the past you were able to comb through Flyte Tyme to look through their discography to see all the songs they'd been a part of. It's amazing to see all those hits they were a part of during that time.

jody?? I never even thought about them in the same breath....

vanessa or pebbles either.

just because someone dances doesn't automatically make them a "janet clone"

when jody first came out i remember our local radio station doing a call in asking if what folks thought any many responded thinking it was janet's new song.

they all took the strong young woman dance thang when they first came out...sure, they evolved after time into their own artists (well, that or they fell off the face of the earth) but IMHO they all started off as a janet-like.

thats my opinion and im sticking to it.

I think people are slow to admit that Jody Watley was on Control's clit. It is pretty obvious considering the change in sound/style/image from her Shalamar days to Jody's `87 solo joint.

she was a part of a group. It wasn't Jody with Shalamar.

When did Janet wear petti coats? confused

I don't think Jody was even thinkin' about riding Janets coat tail. Janet wasn't even Janet before control so whose clit was she riding.

I just think its a reach. I don't think what Janet was doing was some new innovation that all of these artist were biting off of. I see the similarites...but....

I agree. Janet worked with Jam & Lewis on Control and Jody worked with Andre and Prince. Is it any wonder both albums wound up sounding very Prince-like?

Anyway, Jody definitely had her own identity, and her debut has a greater maturity to it than Control does (can you imagine Janet doing Still A Thrill in 1987?) due to her age advantage over Janet.

Yes, more mature emotionally and sexually. Jody was a grown-ass woman at this point, so she wasn't dealing with 19-year-old issues.

There's no way songs like Some Kind of Lover, Don't You Want Me etc. woudl have made it onto Control. True she had the same sort of toughness, but then again she always did. Janet didn't trademark that.

Oh, lots of 'em lately. Mostly her early ones like "Love To Love You Baby", "A Love Trilogy", "Four Seasons of Love", "Bad Girls" Deluxe Edition.

As an album no one ever seems to mention it lol People remember Once Upon A Time and Bad Girls, generally, but that one is one of her most consistent records in terms of album tracks.

I think that pretty much everything she cranked out in the 70's and early 80's is consistent.

I've mentioned it a few times and got some hmm and confuse when I compared it in structure and content to I'm Breathless.I also think it's one of her best.

I've never considered Jody a clone because she initially started out in Shalamar and then she went onto do her own thing. I knew more about Jody has an artist before Janet, who initially I saw as an actress rather than a singer.

And I think JJ was a clone of her brother.

That was Joseph Jackson's original plan it seems:

Say You Do sounds like a synth-funk version of Michael's Don't Stop Til You Get Enough.

BTW, it also dawn on me that ever a MALE Janet-clone existed at one time.

HINT: Janet was one married to the clone's older brother, James.

Good lawd...you have a very loose interpretation of what constitutes a clone.

How is Chico Debarge a Janet clone? Because he jumped over the chair like Janet did in the Miss U Much video??? confuse

Beside that, did you listen to the beats of Talk To Me? It did sound a lot like What Have You Done For Me Lately.

And Chico even sported a Prince-ly hairstyle for good measure! cool

The 2 mid 80's albums he did had their moments. Brownmark did some of the tracks.

Anyway, its just the minni sound. Those louder than life snares were all the rage then. If you had to pin his sound down, its more Cymone then Jam/Lewis.
