I ordered this from amazon last week
I haven`t seen it before either, but Irene Cara is in it, so it can`t be that bad...

Finally it recieves its awaited updated treatment! I have this one on VHS and I haven't watched it in a while. This was the real Dreamgirls before the play and movie appeared and it was a pretty good film. I also see that the Sparkle soundtrack by Aretha Franklin and Curtis Mayfield is selling many copies at Amazon.com ever since the 2006 Dreamgirls film debuted in theaters this week! [Edited 1/1/07 0:55am] Check me out and add me on:

[Edited 1/1/07 0:52am] Cool, Franklin`s "Sparkle" is one of the best soundtracks ever... I`m glad she recorded the songs, the songs used in the movie sounds like demo versions...

I think the bonus disc is just a cd with 5 Aretha songs from the soundtrack...

But in a loveable kind of way, it'll become a favorite and the quotes are great: "Sister can't fly on one wing..." so explains Lonette McKee while on a drug binge before a gig. I love this movie, but instead Dreamgirls, the triad of female lead characters reminds me more of a ghetto, quasi-blaxpoitation version Valley of The Dolls, with the Nealy O'Hara character being portrayed by Lonette McKee's character 'Sister'. It's camp at its' finest m'dear... ...oddly I've been jocking those Aretha versions of the soundtrack pretty hard for the last couple of months, listening to her sing 'Hooked On Your Love' makes it abundantly clear why she is th Queen of Soul

Yeah, but camp is a good thing...
The album is filled with good songs, and "Hooked on your love" is one of the best tracks, along with "Rock with me"

Although the movie was campy at best, the Curtis Mayfield/Aretha Franklin soundtrack is 10 times better. At a time when Curtis and Aretha were at the declines of their careers, which sunk into nosedive, the Sparkle soundtrack seemed to be a major comeback for both of them and it was an old-school revival! [Edited 1/1/07 8:47am] There were rowdy scenes behind making that album. Aretha & Curits were @ it against each other during the process of the recording. Curtis was a perfectionist, she was a real one-take-artist who wouldn't take any lip about telling her how to sing,,,so you know there was a clash.

I heard that Curtis recorded and produced the album in only 3 to 5 days and Aretha didn't really appreciate him rushing the recording of the album and having him tell her how to sing some of the songs of the album. To this day, many fans of the Sparkle film still believe that Curtis should've just used the ladies in the film to sing on the soudtrack, not Aretha. But it sounds a little more earthier and rawer with the vocals of Aretha. Check me out and add me on:

Listen to a sample: http://www.cdconnection.c...ers/178883 There're some good stuff in there I see that they pulled a Bettye Swann gem outta their vault. That is one obscure soul sista,,,I suggest you to check her out Icicle, if you love melancholy voices

This is the only thing i have by her, but i like her voice. I`ll have to check out more of her stuff, i see there`s some decent compliations.
I also like The sweet inspirations, you can tell where Whitney Houston got her talent from...

I have the movie on VHS and truthfully,it's not really that good. It's very low budget and the storyline is kinda predictable.Still, there are some redeeming qualities. The soundtrack is good and Irene Care is sensational.I wish they had released a soundtrack featuring the stars in the movie.I understand why they got Aretha Franklin to do it....they wanted a "big name artist" involved. But it's weird hearing her soundtrack, when the film doesn't even use her versions of the songs
