I remember hearing one reviewer say that Jody Watley was what Janet wishes she was, or something to that effect. They're breakthrough albums came out very close to each other. I don't think they are clones but more like contemporaries.

While I wouldn't call her a full on clone (because she could actually sing), Karyn White was definitely pulling a Janet in that awful video for Secret Rendezvous. I had to misspell it to find it on youtube, BTW. One of the worst videos ever, but she's trying her hardest to be Janet.

Same here, and I was a big fan of both when they first hit it big. I think the main reason that I don't see one as a knock off of the other is that Jody's music had more pop appeal to it. I also think Jody had been around long enough as a performer to find her own identity before Janet started recording.

This is funny, because I remember at least two threads within the past couple of years where people had insisted that Jody was a Madonna knock off. Why can't she be her own performer? The music on her first two solo albums, with rare exception, sounded unique to her.
