Bette Midler movies

I`m not a big fan of her music, but she has starred in many enjoyable movies...

Which Bette Midler movies are your favorites?

Here`s mine

Big business

Ruthless people

The first wives club

The Rose

And her comedy trilogy for Touchstone: Ruthless People, Outrageous Fortune and Big Business. I do not like Down and Out in Beverly Hills, although many do.

Yeah, that one sucks. lol Anything she did in the 90's pretty much sucked, with the exception of First Wives Club, which was OK.

I kinda liked "That old feeling", when she starts hitting the paparazzi for taking a picture of her from the wrong angle falloff
"Drowning Mona" was horrible, and i haven`t even bothered to see "Isn`t she great"...

I liked her in The Stepford wives though.

"I'm going to use a pinecone as the baby Jesus this year"
"And I'm going to attach a pinecone to my vibrator and have a really merry Christmas"

falloff falloff

Paula Prentiss was way better in the original.

I have to say Bette really hasn't had a good comedy role in a long time. But then there are few good comedy roles these days, period.

I haven`t seen the original...

You`re right, the last thing i saw her in was "What women wants", but it was only a cameo.

She`s starring in a new movie called "Then she found me", directed by Helen Hunt hmmm

The original is definitely worth a look. It plays it much creepier than the remake. The tone of the remake was just all over the place. I think there were many problems during that production.

What i liked about the remake was the humour, like the pinecones and the woman spinning around. I always thought the original would be more subtle, but i`ll have to check it out... nod

It is. It's a 70's movie, so definitely slower and more subtle but ultimately more rewarding, I think. Did they do the black eyes thing in the remake? I completely forget. lol

In the original, Joanna stumbles across the android version of herself, which has been completed....except for the eyes. All that is there are empty, black, expressionless glass balls. It's a fabulous and classic moment in 70's horror. You have an evocative image like that that defines the whole movie.

It's such a weird movie to have remade, since the original was not a comedy (despite what others may tell you, only the final scene descends into satire). It is a product of its period and the sentiments of the time...that simply do not work in 2006.

I thought it was a comedy too.... lol

And about the eyes, i`m really not sure, but i don`t think it was in the remake...

I`m not good when it comes to 70s movies, i like old movies, but most of the 70s movies i like are the CAMPY ones... "The eyes of Laura Mars", "Saturday night fever", "Pink flamingos" and "Love story", although i wouldn`t call that one campy...

Oh wow eek I've finally found someone who likes Eyes of Laura Mars lol Have you seen Mommie Dearest?

I like a lot of 70's movies, but that decade in film took itself too seriously in many ways lol Everyone was concerned with making serious pictures and comedy really took a backseat. I can safely say that none of my favorite comedies date to the 70's. Things turned around again with Airplane and I had a lot of fun with the 80's biggrin

You don`t like "Eyes of Laura Mars"?

I haven`t seen "Airplane" yet, but i`ve heard it`s a good movie.

Yeah, the 80s was a great decade for movies, especially comedies (movies with Tom Hanks, Goldie Hawn and Bette Midler), horror (some of the halloween movies, friday the 13th, nightmare on elm street) and of course the the musicals (Flashdance, fame, footloose)

BUT my favorites from that decade (that i can think of now) are

"Beetlejuice" (hilarious!!!)
"Moonstruck"
"Witches of Eastwick"
"Mommie dearest"
"The goonies"
"Stand by me"

I haven`t seen the movie "Adventures in babysitting" yet, i wonder if it`s any good...

No, I'm not a fan, but I can see why people might like it. I don't like how John Carpenter shot the film, and that was the beginning of the end for Faye Dunaway (she killed her career with this, Mommie Dearest and Supergirl).

I haven`t seen "Airplane" yet, but i`ve heard it`s a good movie.

It's VERY funny!

Comedies in the 80's didn't take themselves seriously and were completley unselfconscious. Today you couldn't get films like that made. Another of my favorites is Clue.

All great movies nod Okay I couldn't say Mommie Dearest is a great movie, but it's great fun lol

That movie is sooooo 80's and fun. I love it. Elisabeth Shue was super-hot.

I LOVE "Clue", it was fun with all the different endings you can choose...
I like all those "dark" comedies, "The Addams family" is a guilty pleasure, you like that one?

There were obiviously deleted scenes from that movie, since there were things shown in trailer and/or commericals that where not shown in the movie. And since the movie is often noted for it's special effects (which were awesome), I hope it gets the proper deluxe DVD treatment it deserves.

On the topic, I definately like Bette better as an actress. Not that she is a bad singer, but her movies obviously reach a much larger audience than her music. Not sure what my favorite is, but I have a soft spot for "Hocus Pocus".

I haven`t seen the trailer, maybe it`s on the dvd, i`ll have to check.

It was the same with the first wives club... The trailer showed several scenes that weren`t in the movie, including Bette Midler in a catfight and her taking up a kife from a dinnertable or something with a hilarious expression on her face... WHY would anyone leave out that sad
