I think it is selfish. It's only right to pay your last respects to somebody; by not attending owing to feeling uncomfortable with being in that situation, you're putting yourself first and being disrespectful to someone who is no longer around.

Can you get off "Prince should have been at the funeral" The topic is about JB not Prince. P is allowed to greive any way he wants. It is not up to you or anyone else to make the decision for him.

Rev. Sharpton said in his eulogy something about James Brown changing the world by putting us on the 1 and the 3, instead of the 2 and the 4. That made me think a little.

Even if I am myself involved with musical styles where the destruction of the rhythmic structures is a trademark strategy, it's hard to avoid the blueprint of funk music if you were exposed to it so strongly when you were growing up (like I was personally). In that sense you are still heralding the original innovation in its denial, it's inescapable.

After the Celebration at the JAMES BROWN ARENA, there was an after-show by current as well as former bandmembers of Dr. James Brown's band The Soul Generals at a club in Augusta, GA on Broad St., where the statue is, called The Soul Bar which is dedicated to the Godfather Dr. James Brown (opened in 1995).

nod I completely agree. JB and his classic rhythm sections redefined the accenting of the beat to the one and three in most popular music. It was around a little before (probably, deep down, it came from Africa), but JB made it into a science. It's probably his biggest innovation. We now live in 'James Brown Time', rhythmically speaking, whether we go with it or react against it.

When my wife told me JB has passed, my initial reaction was that he was 73 and that it was OK, That he had lived his life.....then I stared reading this thread. By the time I got to page 4 tears were streaming down my face. I shed quit a few more before the weekend was over.

JB will be missed.

okay, i am just getting in on the tail end of this thread-- can anyone please tell me why folks keep referring to JB as "Dr." james brown? what's w/ the doctor thing all of the sudden? last time i checked a person cannot receive an honorary degree posthumously... just wondering.

also (i am at work and do not have access to a TV right now), can you please tell me what other celebs showed up to pay their respects. i didn't think prince would. not that i am downing him for that-- i just couldn't really picture him showing up to something like that. its very public.

kudos to mike for being there. the guy looks horrible tho (had to say it-- he looks like an alien standing next to human beings). anyway, i'm glad he is there regardless.

"James brown was to be awarded next May a honorary doctorate from Paine College. He was going to walk in graduation and be Dr. James Brown. When he made his transition the other night, there was an emergency meeting and they decided to bestow the honors on him now."
Says Rev. Al Sharpton at the celebration.

And James Brown gets the degree, which is accepted by his three daughters, with symbols etc. from the president of Paine College and the chairman of the board of trustees.

Maybe the full funeral stream is still there at wrdw.com, then it's after Rev. Jesse Jackson's eulogy, after 4hours.

At least we can still rely on 'Dr' Brown to provide us with an excellent prescription of life-enhancing funk on his records and CDs! smile

I'm watching the Larry King interview right now. I don't know what went on between Tomi and James, but I think it's just wrong the way they treated her and her son at that funeral. In a circumstance like a funeral you know they should at least try to make peace about whatever is going on. Another thing....I just saw on ebay where people are selling his funeral programs and acting like only the family got them. That's false....almost everybody including people on the outside got them.I knew someone would try to cash in on it.

Nice article

Jerry Wexler told a journalist once that "Cold Sweat" just fucked up everybody, that it made every musician who worked for Atlantic Records go back to the drawing board to try and catch up with what this guy was doing.

lol

There was one from a high school band musician who had been in a school bus on the way to a game in Augusta. James was friendly with the director. One night he stopped their bus on the way to a game and got on the bus to give the band a pep talk. He spent 20 minutes shaking the hands of musicians, encouraging them, thanking them for representing their school. And years later, one of the kids from that bus ran into Brown somewhere in Augusta. And he said, "Mr. Brown, I don't know if you remember, but I was one of the musicians on that bus you talked to." And James said, "I remember you! Do you still play that horn? Because my band is rehearsing, and if you want to come sit in, you can!"

How lucky was he.....that's just too fuckin' amazing. You better be on point too if you wanna play in James's band.

sad When I heard this I was very saddened. He was still going strong. I so

hoped he & prince would collaborate together and put out an album or just jam

together. I would have paid alot to see this. My mother and I NEVER missed a

LIVE performance of his when he came to milwaukee, wi. where I grew up, and

that was quite OFTEN! My mom loved james. We ALWAYS made sure we got very good

seats. He was a super performer (like prince), His band was tight. Never

missed a beat. Most of all his dancing and the cape thing was awesome. I STILL

say HE was the funkiest by far. Music and stage show, with PRINCE following

close behind. cool I do not need say I own ALL his albums and CD'S. If I feel

down, I put him on and I FEEL GOOD!. Just like with prince! They are THERAPY

like no other. Rest in Peace JAMES! We will Miss you but I'm sure you joined

the rest of the GREATS wink in rock & roll heaven. Its gotta be a hell of a

band. LOVE YOU! ALWAYS WILL. I have great memories.
May the BELLS ring 4 U even when ur not in love. hug kisses
