which one do you like better and why or do you like both the same?

I like the Cure better. Bobert Smith has more talent than Morrisey IMO.

There was a Cure/ Morrisey face off concert here in a small but legendary bar in here Buffalo a while back. That was wild, Robert Smith was better by a mile. You just had to be there .

Cure.

The Cure by far. I love The Smiths, but The Cure are way more diverse and Robert Smith is way more talented musically.

The Smiths. I was a Cure fan first, but I listen to The Smiths a lot more these days. I love them both though.

The Cure! I'm a big fan by way of my sister who was nearly one of those goth chicks that would scream "Robert Smith" after a Cure song was ending on the radio. I kind of like the Smiths but often find them whiny. They get played a lot on Sirius's classic alt rock station but I rather find myself listening to a whole song.

I dig both of 'em. The Cure for their moodines and (((aura))) The Smiths for their musicianship. Johnny Marr wrote some incredible music for these guys. Although I've been a fan since way back when, nothing in The Cures catalogue can touch "There is a Light", IMO.

"Louder Than Bombs" is better the whole way through than just about anything the Cure ever released.

This is a really strange comparison. I think talent-wise, the Smiths hands down. However, the genre is full of larger than life personalities, and Robert Smith has managed to constuct a self-sufficient ecosystem.

So I'd go with the Cure.

The only comparison would be to line it up next to the "Standing on the Beach" cassette with all of the singles and b-sides the Cure released from '79-'86, in which case they would shit all over the Smiths.

And as far as talent and songwriting goes, I think Bob has more talent in his hairspray than all the members of the Smiths combined.

I feel Morrissey has a better voice (it took me a loooong time to get into Robert Smith's vocals), but the Cure are way more interesting musically. You don't get the variation in The Smiths' catalog that you do in The Cure's.

Excellent question. When I was in Jr. High and High school during the 80's, out here in Los Angeles, KROQ was the station that played these two groups to DEATH. I dated a girl that was heavily into The Smiths and it was through her that I got hip to them first. I actually ran a thread on here a long time ago about The Smith's fantastic song "Shoplifters of the World". Although I dig The Smith's music, (Johnny Marr is a cool guitarist), besides "Shoplifters", I can't really get with the vocals. Or the lyrics, for that matter. They're too.....something. And they get on my nerves. The Cure on the other hand, I didn't need a girlfriend to hip me to them. I was already there, from their first album. My fave album by them is the masterpiece double album "Kiss Me, Kiss Me, Kiss Me". Robert Smith has influenced my writing regarding lyrics. I can relate to Robert's words and visions whereas u couldn't pay me to relate to The Smith's lyrics. It's just not going to happen. Me growing wings and flying is more likely.

Not that Morrisey is a slacker. It was really special to see them both up close and together, And they had a blast the whole night too, played off of each other beautifully. I would have loved to see them together when they were younger.

Listening to the Smiths is like spending the evening with my brother-in-law. Listen to him for five minutes? He’s funny, charming, and clever. Half an hour? His witticisms are getting tired, and I’m getting a little irritated and starting to wish he’d shut up. By the end of the evening I’m usually playing out murder scenarios in my head.

No, not this debate again.

I don't understand why folks always pit great artists against each other. They do it with Prince and MJ, Beatles and Stones, Elvis and Jerry Lee, etc. Why can't both groups be appreciated for their virtues and not pitted against one another?















But of course I'm gonna say The Smiths were better. The Cure often makes uneven albums. But The Smiths entire catalog is damn near perfect.

I just saw Morrissey last night. Good stuff.
