Madonna's Music: best album of the decade? I know it's only 2006 but over the years i find this album a true "visionnary": not only did it understand & use everything that makes a good pop song, but it was so much announcing what was 2 come: electroclash as the predominant musical movement of the 2000's, the resurgence of taste for 80's synths & sounds, minimalist hip-hop...
I don't know, "Music" sounds just perfect 2 me, & 6 years after its release it still could have been recorded yesterday & sound perfectly modern. The melodies r catchy, the arrangments r just what's necessary 2 feel the essence of the song, the lyrics r clever, the mix is so damn neat... Share ur love

i've always had mixed feelings about this album, just like i have
with American Life. it feels like half the disc is extremely good and very well done, yet the other half is generic songs that copy past hits (like the song that is just Beautiful Stranger Pt II etc). if you'd mix those two albums together you could come up with one very tight disc. anywayz, people will dislike me bringing this up again since it's like most madonna fans think its not cool anymore to state it but i just think that Ray of Light is her best attempt at electro. it's a perfect balance between techno/ambient/electro and a more personal and balanced lyrical theme. the album flows really well and hardly ever sets a foot wrong. to me, albums like Music and American Life try to take that feel and push it further. and imo they both fail on that account. the feeling they give me is one of cold contemporary dance, with the exception of a handfull of great, warm tunes. neither one reaches the intimate warmth and glow of Ray of Light in either the musical surroundings or the lyrical approach. ramble ramble ramble what i meant to say is that i think Music is a cool album but not album of the decade. not even if it is just conserning madonna's own output. sorry, rant done now [Edited 12/20/06 4:39am] and true love lives on lollipops and crisps

No.
But I'm not a Madonna fan.

I think 'Confessions On A Dancefloor' is superior to 'Music' 'Confessions' is the best Madonna album of this decade, imo. It's where she needs to be,musically: doing upbeat dance/pop tracks that are catchy and fun.Songs like "Get Together","Jump","Sorry","Push" and "Like It Or Not" are Madonna at her absolute best, imo.
Having said that,I still think 'Music' is very impressive too. It's probably her most adventurous album, and several tracks are highly experimental."Don't Tell Me" combines electonica with country music elements...the title track is a lively throwback to the electrofunk jams of the early 80s..."Impressive Instant" is modern-day disco that sizzles..."Paradise (Not For Me)" is dreamy and effective.Like the previous album 'Ray Of Light',it's still mostly electonica but I think there was a real effort to make the music "warmer",even country-ish."Gone" is one of her best ballads. It's not an album that you "get" the first time you play it.It takes a few spins before you realize how cool it really is.

None of Madonna's albums this decade even come close.

Oddly, I was just listening to the album, and it's gotten better with time. My only problem with Music is that it's inconsistant. Half the album is extremely good dance music and the other half is generic folk mixed with electronica.
It's one of the gems of her catalog, for sure, and had she done all the album in the vein of 'Music', 'impressive instant' and 'runaway lover', it would have indeed probably been the best in the decade. Personally, I think COADF is a better album just cause it's more classic Madonna and it flows perfectly. Ray of Light, of course, is Madonna's best work by far. Up till then, no major mainstream pop star(maybe with the possible exception of U2 and David Bowie) had made an album that embraced electronica so much.

COADF is exactly where Madonna needs to be,musically.

Its a decent pop album, nothing more. Its got some amazing tracks on there (Music, Dont Tell Me, What It Feels Like FOr A Girl), but its got some steaming piles mof turd on there too - mostly produced by William Orbit.
Runaway Lover is awful, Amazing is a cop out copy of Beautiful stranger, but not as interesting. Nobody's Perfect is a pretty ballad drowned by that dreadful vocoder and static plodding beats. Other than that its a good album. I Deserve it is fantastic; Impressive Instant is interesting - and uses the vocoder to good effect; Paradise is a beautiful, and Gone marginally redeems William Orbit - Its a perfect album closer. Having heard the outtake Liquid Love, i can honestly say Im amazed they left it off the album in favour of tracks like Runaway Lover. One of the interesting things about music is all the melodies are really downbeat - unusual for a supposed classic pop sounding album as it was hyped. The only tracks that are up sounding are Music and Dont Tell Me. Liquid Love would have injected a bit of "up-ness" to it. In all honesty I think she was being quite lazy on this album - she could ahve produced better filler than that which brings this album down.

I think it's her worst album this decade- a totally hit or miss affair along the likes of Like a Virgin. Feel free to join in the Prince Album Poll 2018! Let'a celebrate his legacy by counting down the most beloved Prince albums, as decided by you!

I agree,"Liquid Love" is fantastic.I keep hoping that she will finally release that song on an album. And yes,'Music' is a very "downbeat" album...very mellow,in fact.I don't think she was quite ready to make a complete dance album yet.We had to wait until 2005 for that.

The best Madonna album of the decade is American Life. Music was just a prelude to it

I would have to agree with you, even though I didn't like it at first. It is certainly her most interesting.

Haven't heard the rest of the album, but "Nobody Knows Me", "American Life" and "Hollywood" are enough to make that album #1 for me. Music is very strong, though, and "Gone" just might be my favorite Madge track ever.

I think the only flaw of Ray of light is the length.

I love all that is Madonna.
And I think Music is the weakest of the later-Madonna catalog. Lars hits the nail on the head with this: it feels like half the disc is extremely good and very well done,
yet the other half is generic songs that copy past hits (like the song that is just Beautiful Stranger Pt II etc). http://elmadartista.tumblr.com/ http://twitter.com/madartista

"Music" and "American Life" should have been rolled into one and released in 2002. "Drowned World" tour should have come a couple years earlier to support "Ray of Light." Everyone knows "Hollywood" and "Intervention" were originally intended for "Music," right?
