Jimmy Nolen = Funk Guitar U know, with all of the talk on the Org about guitar players, and with all of the (self-proclaimed) funk heads here...
Why doesn't anyone wanna talk about Jimmy Nolen? He practically invented Funk Guitar... ...he influenced the grease within me. "He's a musician's musician..."

To be honest, funk has never really been about guitar for me. I like bassists and vocalists. I mean sure, guitar adds nice flavor, but without cool basslines and funky vocalists, shit just ain't happening. It is not known why FuNkeNsteiN capitalizes his name as he does, though some speculate sunlight deficiency caused by the most pimpified white guy afro in Nordic history.

Yes, there R many beautiful aspects of The Funk... Bass, Vox, Drums, Percussion, keys, HORNS... But U gotta get your Funk Guitar in order, and tight... U R not just a guitar player, but also a percussionist as well. And U & the Bass Guitar BETTER work together, as one... Grease, Peace, and Release, G. "He's a musician's musician..."

Ndeed! anybody playing serious rhythm owes Nolen a debt!!!! Prince once mentioned in an interview that his biggest guitar influences were Hendrix, Santana, Jimmy Nolen, Tony Maiden(Rufus) and Freddie Stone! Nolen does get mentioned here, though maybe not lot lately, and certainly not as much as he should (he might not be brought up as much when a lot folks are listing 'Favorites'). But over the last few years, most discussions and posts about important or influential guitarists will bring him up... I'm glad when he does get mentioned, because, like a lot of great instrumentalists, people will know his sound, but not his name. A lot of folks will refer to "'James Brown- style guitar licks"( kind of like when people talk about "The Motown sound", but don't know about Jamerson, Robert White, Benny Benjamin, Joe Messina, Uriel Jones , etc.)... Unfortunately, they're from that era when the instrumentalists were relegated to the background, and the frontman got all the acclaim. ... Jimmy Nolen gets MUCH love and respect around here, 'specially from us geetar players - I have an intimate relationship with his licks, courtesy of all the James Brown 45s in my house. Like taking a master class in funk guitar. My author page: https://www.amazon.com/au...eretttruth
