Joanna Newsome

Any fans here? I think she's amazing... I don't own her albums yet, but hope to soon...

A reviewer in Slate called her "anachronistic," which is what I hope to be as a musician. A folkie harpist! Wow...

People complain about her high, squeaky voice but it reminds me of some of the unschooled mountain folks, high & lonesome...

Thoughts?

I like her, but in small doses. I'm pretty tolerant of odd voices, but hers is extremely odd.

I'd rather gouge my eyes out than listen to her fucking voice. A load of shit.

Sorry for sitting on the fence for this one.

"Anachronistic" is a euphemism for "shit", by the way.

Her voice seems to sound more polished on Ys than on her first album...

I've read really good reviews about her latest album 'Ys'. I've heard one song and I agree her voice takes awhile to get used to. Her music sounds very Renaissance Faire-y.

In that photo she looks more like the Tori Amos of the washboard.

i hope you're not expressing some sort of ignorant prejudice against folk music and country people... well, can't expect everyone to understand. shrug but i like authenticity.

A Friend and I came up with Hillbilly Bjork.

wink

But for some reason I'm oddly fascinated by the Ys cd.
