Just caught an article with Doug Morris, he's basically one of the top execs in Universal/DefJam and he has said "2007, will be their biggest year yet", citing new Releases from 50 Cent,Eminem, and "2" new Mariah Carey releases. Now first things first the Mariah releases are slated to be a Tour CD/DVD package out early next year which im sure will do well, and then a new studio album in time for the 2007 Holiday season which should also do well, but banking on 50 cent and Eminem is a little troubling, not that they dont sell, but they arent exactly "money in the bank" artists, Eminem i can see doing better, but hes coming off a Hits cd and yet another Retirement for someone in the industry. 50 cent on the other hand is someone that was a huge seller at first and now has taken himself out of that spotlight because many felt his image got "soft", so since the live of a pop star at their peak is about 3-4 years its even less for rappers, just seeing Jay Z's release only pull in 700K when the label was hoping for the big Million week, especially it being the biggest shopping weekend, im not really sure what this executive is so hopeful with. Its also ironic because the label is banking on Mariah, someone who they thought of cutting loose if she didnt have big sales after Charmbracelet. It should also be known that Mariahs deal is up after she delivers the next studio record, and Def Jam got her cheap, expect her to ask for a big pay day or exit.

Yall kill me so selling over 700k is a failure, i want to ask how many artist in the Soundscan era, sold over a mil in it's first week, with the exception of Britney, Eminem, NSYNC, Norah, BSB, Usher, and 50 Cent nobody else did this

why do we compare every other music era and stop comparing the NSYNC BSB Britney era since those sales aren't likely to happen again , i mean it is like everybody comparing album sales to Thriller it doesn't make sense to since that is abnormal

Actually its the label that has come out and expressed disappointment, blaming "Myspace" for leaking the CD, which is a phony excuse since they are trying to invest in Myspace. 2 days after the CD came out the label was already crying over a supposed leak of the cd the week before it came out, and starting threatening law suits claiming myspace cut into at least 30% of its sales, which means they were projecting a million or more. Of course 700K is amazing, but thats not how a label is looking at it long term, CD's now do all their business week 1 and 2, and unless you go on Oprah you arent going to see many gains in sales after that. The soundcan era ruined everything because people still think its 100% when its not, it is Labels and what they ship out to stores and reorders based on mid week inventories, so ingeneral the numbers are about 20% off depending on how much shipped. Trust me i worked in Music Retail a long time and dealt with buyers and labels and soundscan is something they try very hard to manipulate on a weekly basis and they do. But an interesting thing also is that people because of soundscan believe that CDs arent selling at the pace they did, not totally true. An interesting point would be 20 years ago Bon Jovi's "Slippery When Wet" during its first 6 months of release did 2.2 million in sales and stayed in the top 10 the whole time. Now if you break that down into weeks "lets do the math" as Prince would say 2,200,000/24 weeks= 91,300 a week on average, which clearly would place in the top 10 now, the only difference is that "Consistency" does not exist anymore, you arent gonna have a record in the top 10 for 6 months with 4 top 10 singles, also the Bon Jovi record was pre soundscan, or pre corruption.

Whenever label heads start boasting about shit NONE of it comes true. So Mariah is probably worried at this point.

cool Actually, in his projections for Universal in 05 he claimed Mariah would have the biggest selling record, and well it happened. Doug Morris is the last of the big flashy execs after Clive he'll "make" it happen for all three of them.

Doug Morris is an idiot. Instead of worrying about how to get PAID he's suing Myspace and all his competition.

Lemme see. I predict that the new Eminem will include a tribute to his murdered friend and plea to stop the violence, before going on about how he wants to slice and dice his ex-ex-wife, his mother and all the people who are making his millionaire life a misery. And there'll be another song about his daughter.

Was Tommy out boasting about how she was going to hit #1 year after year after year? No. He simply DID it. There's talking and then there's doing. This moron probably thought Charmbracelet would be a blockbuster, too. They were thinking of dropping Mariah if Mimi didn't do well.

Mariah and Eminem are coming off big sellers and will get lots of airplay. They both have huge teen audience. (mariah just gained a whole new audience who's parents probably bought her debut) So it's to predict that they have moderate (double platinum) success at least.

I can see it with Mariah, especially with it coming out in the fall getting close to the holidays, but Eminem i dont see being able to do it. Its just not happening like that anymore, between downloads, bootlegs for 5 bucks, and a lack of stores carrying music anymore, there are tracks from Eminems new compilation album that have been circulating since early summer here in Nyc, the same goes for 50 cent.
