This DefJam/Universal guy is way too hopeful for 2007

Just caught an article with Doug Morris, he's basically one of the top execs in Universal/DefJam and he has said "2007, will be their biggest year yet", citing new Releases from 50 Cent,Eminem, and "2" new Mariah Carey releases. Now first things first the Mariah releases are slated to be a Tour CD/DVD package out early next year which im sure will do well, and then a new studio album in time for the 2007 Holiday season which should also do well, but banking on 50 cent and Eminem is a little troubling, not that they dont sell, but they arent exactly "money in the bank" artists, Eminem i can see doing better, but hes coming off a Hits cd and yet another Retirement for someone in the industry. 50 cent on the other hand is someone that was a huge seller at first and now has taken himself out of that spotlight because many felt his image got "soft", so since the live of a pop star at their peak is about 3-4 years its even less for rappers, just seeing Jay Z's release only pull in 700K when the label was hoping for the big Million week, especially it being the biggest shopping weekend, im not really sure what this executive is so hopeful with. Its also ironic because the label is banking on Mariah, someone who they thought of cutting loose if she didnt have big sales after Charmbracelet. It should also be known that Mariahs deal is up after she delivers the next studio record, and Def Jam got her cheap, expect her to ask for a big pay day or exit.

2 releases could mean 1 tour cd, 1 tour dvd. both take time to produce and release.

True but predicting in surge in sales is one thing, "the best year ever?" not even Bob Marley could smoke soemthing that good to get that prediction

Yeah 1 release is a planned DVD and Cd package from the tour, this could be changed to just a DVD the other is a new studio album which has been started already

Whenever label heads start boasting about shit NONE of it comes true. So Mariah is probably worried at this point.

Yeah Mariah actually was back here in New York working on the DVD, she was slated to appear at the AMA show but changed it, even the dumb announcer on the AMA show said she was appearing on the show, and yet she wasnt even in LA, she was in NYC. Universal actually wanted to rush this out for the holidays to kind of save the dismal year but there was no way that was going to happen, Mariah does have some pull especially when her loyal fans are involved, she didnt want to rush-release some crappy tour dvd just so the "suits" could have a good holiday, she is taking the time to make sure the fans get the best stuff.

I can wait for the new Mariah studio album! I hope there more James Poyser and Big "jim"Wright. I'm sure there will be hype and all stops universal will pull to make sure this abum hits and unlike her last few albums, I'm sure the producers will give her their best material based on her last album sales, although end of the day its her voice and melodies not producers that make her records stand out as Jermaine Dupri proved.

Which show did you go too? I think that was only on for one show, at least on DVD we can skip the costume changes

Yall kill me so selling over 700k is a failure, i want to ask how many artist in the Soundscan era, sold over a mil in it's first week, with the exception of Britney, Eminem, NSYNC, Norah, BSB, Usher, and 50 Cent nobody else did this

why do we compare every other music era and stop comparing the NSYNC BSB Britney era since those sales aren't likely to happen again , i mean it is like everybody comparing album sales to Thriller it doesn't make sense to since that is abnormal

I;m willing to wait for Mariah's new album if she does some amazing vocals and arrangements like she did for "We Belong Together," "Mine Again," "Circles," and "Fly Like a Bird" and loses a lot of the cheesy hip-hop stuff. If it's as good as "Mimi" or "Butterfly", I'd love to see her sell 3 million copies in the first week and 20 million copies in the USA woot! But realistically, at the rate the major record labels are going these days, she'll be lucky to sell three million copies total in the USA. I even think she made a comment about that last year at the Billboard Music Awards that she doesn't believe that she'll ever sell five million copies of her CD's again because the industry is in decline.
