I hate girly folk music. I mean, really. I loathe the whole Lilith Fair, angry/sensitive, willowy-voice guitar strumming/tinkly-piano thing.

I like my girl musicians big, hairy, bruised up and pissed off.

So why am I all about Azure Ray right now? They're so precious and urbane and girly-girl sounding - everything I hate - but I'm completely eating their music right up, as if I were PacMan and their songs were little yellow dots! Wokka wokka wokka!

I'm particularly taken with their song "If You Fall". I love the lyrics - just very smart and keen and cynical in a very clean way. And the vocals are gorgeous. Very plain and pleasant and fairly unpretentious.

They seem like smart gals. I'd love to know what other people think of them, if anyone has indeed heard them before. I just discovered them recently...as in, like, this week. I'm sure I'll be over them by Christmas, but for now I think they're swell.

Never heard of 'em, but you do have a soft spot for early Joni, so you're not entirely folk and whimsy free.
