Holdsworth: Perhaps the greatest guitarist according to other guitarists Allan Holdsworth is the guitarists guitarist so to speak. He is admired by jazzmusicians, musicians from the progressive field and by rockguitarists such as Eddie Van Halen, Steve Vai and Yngwie.
Here is a rare clip from 1984 in Tokyo with Allan on guitar, (accompanied by supermusicians Chad Wackerman, Jimmy Johnson and Paul Williams). http://www.youtube.com/wa...SveDtp0bGU From wikipedia: "He is acclaimed for the complexity of his compositional and improvisational work, as well as his astounding technical skill. Reviewers have compared his compositions to Liszt, and he is also lauded for his peerless technique by rock guitarists such as Edward Van Halen ("He's the best in my book.")[1], Yngwie Malmsteen ("I had to take my hat off to him.") and Frank Zappa ("He's the most interesting guitarist in the universe.")[2] and Steve Vai ("The two best electric guitarists are Jeff Beck and Allan Holdsworth."). The unique efficiency of his playing style, and his mathematical approach to mentally mapping out the fretboard allows him to 'see' symmetrical finger patterns, which produce note flourishes that approach the fluidity of saxophonists such as Wayne Shorter and John Coltrane."

Without question, Holdsworth is one of the great monsters of guitar. He's a guitarist's guitarist. Too bad you posted this on the wrong site. Before the haters drop in, let me give you the rundown standard responses "I've seen Prince do that" "He's very good technically, but Prince plays with more feeling than this guy ever will" "He's good. Yeah, he and Prince are the best." ""You people are always posting about how badly Prince sucks compared to (filling in the blank) "this guitarist". Why can't you just admit that Prince is the best? "He's good with all of those tricks but he can't really play play like Prince does" "He plays too fast. Prince is better because he plays with feeling" "Did you hear the guitar on "Small Club 1988"? There's no way this guy is better than Prince" and the most typical - "Who is this guy? (with the implied insignificance since they don't know him) Holdsworth has inspired many many many guitarists. He is legend.

Not only a unique innovative player, but humble as can be. tA Tribal Disorder http://www.soundclick.com...dID=182431 "Ya see, we're not interested in what you know...but what you are willing to learn. I've seen both these cats in the last few months and they were nothing short of spectacular in their own unique ways. tA Tribal Disorder http://www.soundclick.com...dID=182431 "Ya see, we're not interested in what you know...but what you are willing to learn. C'mon y'all."

I remember an interview in the early 90's where EVH was lamenting how someone as gifted as Allan Holdsworth was barely making ends meet. As a guitar player, listening to Holdsworth (or a Shawn Lane, for that matter) forces me to think outside the box, no pun intended
He shows that the guitar is such a multi-faceted instrument. Awesome technique. My author page: https://www.amazon.com/au...eretttruth
