my personal Best of Bowie collection... tell me what you think.

Hey there...

Yeah, I know... lots of stuff about Bowie in this section, but tell me what you think of this. I'm about to make a best of collection, and I wondered what some of you thought shouldn't be there or SHOULD be there that I've ommitted.

two 2-disc sets by David Bowie. set 1 is 1969/1974, set 2 is 1975/1980... based loosely on the 2 discs that came out in '97 (and even incorporating the cover art--see my avatar).

Anxiety

I wish I still had the tracklists for the Bowie compilation I made KimRachell earlier this summer...maybe when she comes back, she'll share the love. wink

Why does your comp end with Scary Monsters? I know the '80s were bleak, but then there was the '90s...Buddha of Suburbia...Outside...Earthling..."Without You I'm Nothing" w/ Placebo...and of course the 21st Century "Heathen"...all great fun for compiling...

Unless, of course, you're making a Poor Man's version of the Virgin "Best Of" CDs, in which case, more power to ya...

ends with scary monsters because i'm still trying to figure out if there's enough good material to fill 4, 3, or just 2 discs for the 80's and 90's combined. the 90's are more promising, but the 80's is a tough call... plus the problem of Tin Machine and if it's even really worth including.

Moonbeam

Great idea, Aaron! I have a few suggestions.

  • All of "Station to Station?" Why not only 4 or 5 from this album? Including the whole thing seems odd to me. But there are only 2 albums on that disc anyway, so keep it how you like.
  • I would axe "Lady Stardust," simply because you have 8 other songs from "Ziggy" already. I know how much you like that song, though. wink

Hey, when the 6 songs on one album are among his best, what can I do? wink Oh, and did I mention it's my favorite Bowie album? wink And that these 6 + 6 + 1 fill up the disc perfectly? wink

I can't see Let's Dance, China Girl, Absolute Beginners or Under Pressure/Dancing In The Street (which I guess you missed off cos they're collaborations) ... oh, and the Drummer Boy one he did with Bing too! biggrin. My fave of the ones you've left off though is Cat People.

Great collection though ... I'd buy it! ... and I'm so happy you've put Wild Is The Wind on there ... one of my absolute favourite tracks of all time, by any artist. It's far better than any other version out there.

The only one I would have taken off is TVC15 - I really don't like that track. A lot of the ones you've put on there I haven't heard of so I'm going to have to check them out.

ps ... I hadn't heard of John I'm Only Dancing Again ... is it just a re-release of John I'm Only Dancing?

pps - I've just seen Modern Love isn't there - didn't u like the Let's Dance album? ... oh and Richochet.

this set only goes up to 1980. i'm still thinking on the 80's/90's discs. smile

like i said, it only goes up to 1980. i'm still trying to figure out how many discs to devote to the 80's and 90's. it's either another 4, or just 2. still thinking.

John I'm Only Dancing Again is almost a completely new song. It's a disco workout. Quite long. Done in 74, released in 79.

Ending it with "Scary Monsters" makes perfect sense to me.

I could of started a thread about this cd alone. I'm refering to the 2nd disc of the "Bowie at The Beeb", set taken from a live show just for fans DB did on 6/27/00. The set is air "tight" with incredible renditions of "Wild is The Wind", "Always Crashing", "Seven", so on so forth. Peep the tracklist -
Wild Is The Wind
Ashes To Ashes
Seven
This Is Not America
Absolute Beginners
Always Crashing In The Same Car
Survive
Little Wonder
Man Who Sold The World
Fame
Stay
Hallo Spaceboy
Cracked Actor
I'm Afraid Of Americans
Let's Dance

I've had non-bowie fans totally enthralled with this disc, pure ear candy..

TRON

I was just listening to this cd the other day. I can't get over the extended ending of "Stay" where his voice descends. God, I go crazy! And "Wild is the Wind" is as gorgeous as it appears on Station to Station. I don't know how he does it.
