I'm a bit of a lightweight reggae fan with just a few of the more mainstream albums (e.g. Bob Marley) so if anyone here is an expert and wants to recommend some music please do! There have been a lot of documentaries on TV recently about the history of reggae and Jamaican music which has got me interested in getting into it.

Heard a couple of the Greensleeves records (like Scientist) and I really liked it too...

Now I'll have to ban myself for putting this in the wrong forum (it should be in the music (other artists) forum)

Some essential stuff to break in with:

Every and anything Bob Marley, Peter Tosh, Burning Spear, Jimmy Cliff...

Sample some King Tubby, Lee Perry productions...

Best Ofs by Dennis Brown, Gregory Isaacs, Toots and Maytals, Desmond Dekker...

Select classic albums by Bunny Wailer, Steel Pulse, Black Uhuru, Culture, Mighty Diamonds, Big Youth, The Congos, Abyssinians, Max Romeo...

I'm not that up on recent stuff/dancehall but Beenie Man had his moments and Bounty Hunter sounds good. Chaka Demus and Pliars album was good bar a bad cover of "One Nation Under A Groove".

In 90s I was partial to Shabba Ranks, say what you want, he had good flow...

First person to mention Shaggy or Snow loses all credibility points...

On that subject, recently a group called "TOK" had massive #1 reggae hit with "When Eagles Cry", which of course samples Prince's WDC chorus.

The group urged fans to set fire to homosexuals too.

i used to dislike reggae until i moved to my new location and been exposed to it a bit.
although what i hear is just from the radio of those outsides of my streets, it isn't as bad as i thought. most of what is played is dance stuff.

a few days ago, music was playing and i went to the video so i could hear the song better. the song started nasty! a woman kept talking about her vagina and kept screaming like she was in pain. and then the music with the reggae started.

I like reggae. great beats. i like all that latin, salsa, carribbean, african music too. like from the lion king...cool.

From the pop reggae scene, I really liked Mad Cobra's 'Flex'. To me, that was the best. Then I started to really dig Shaggy's 'Mr. Boombastic'. To me, those were classics, but then after that I haven't really had any favorites like that.

Now I hear talk that those popular reggae artists don't get as much 'respect' as 'The prophet' in Jamaica, where concious minded lyrics is what reaches and touches the people. Also held in high regards for her cutting, sexually powerful lyrics, 'Lady Saw'.

Hey, don't forget about Thirt World, Ziggy Marley and The Melodiemakers and listen to Alpha Blondie... also African brothers make good reggae.
When we do talk about Bob Marley, are The Wailers always near.

Not a big fan of reggae myself. Zouk was a bit more interesting, but c'mon Kassav beyond the 90's?!?

And dub music just makes me want to hit the bathroom. Too much reverb, I'm drowning.
