STYX thread "Boat on the River", "Renegade", and "I am the walrus" I figured i would get all three of these songs in one thread instead of three seperate STYX threads. First "I am the Walrus" one of the best Beatle Covers ever, the ironic thing, so far both versions that STYX has done have been live, and yet the Beatles never played it live. Hearing STYX jam on this track, and recreate everything in the song on stage, makes you wish the Beatles had toured one more time with there best material. Next up "Renegade", this song is one of their many anthems, but now with Dennis DeYoung out and Tommy Shaw running the show, they almost dont perform any DeYoung songs at all. Live in concert "Renegade" usually closes the show and runs about 10-15 minutes, with non stop solos of Guitar and Drums, and by the way folks, Todd Sucherman, STYX's drummer since 1995 blows John Blackwell and Michael Bland away, im dead serious and i have seen PRINCE 73 times so i know their playing well, but Todd goes even further, also Todd comes from Jazz roots. Last but not least "Boat on the River", this is the song that cause STYX to fire Deyoung (the first time) back in 1979. Right after STYX hit number 1 with "Babe" Tommy Shaw said "wheres the rock, are we Barry Manilow all of a sudden?" well the label then got the next single ready which was "First Time" which was another ballad, well Tommy said "I quit, if thats released as a single" so to compromise the label released "Boat on the River" Tommys Folk, rock,Mandolin song in every country but the USA as a single, well it became STYX's biggest international hit going number one in most of the countries, but was a B side in the states. "We went where our music was appreciated, and that was everywhere but the USA, we knew we had fans, but there is only so much of the world you can play at once" Magne F | |
