The new box set "A Piano" by Tori Amos is totally owning my ass!

And I've only heard the new songs so far. drool

I can't wait to hear all those remastered oldies, new remixes, alternate versions, demos and collected b-sides.

As always, you can tell she put a lot of thought into this - the tracklists, the new work done for it, etc.

I'm sure the liner notes will be just as much fun to go through. And then there's the package...

She's definitely over-indulging me lately, and I love her for it.

Who else is looking forward to this next week?

As for the new songs, I'm really impressed. I wonder how many outtakes like this she has lying around.

With all of the known non-album stuff she does, the endless covers and improvs - I wouldn't be surprised if this is barely scratching the surface.

Here's what I've heard so far...

Peeping Tommi -

*An "Under the Pink" outtake that would've fit perfectly on the 2nd half of the album. It has a similar somber tone to songs like "Cloud On My Tongue" and "Yes, Anastasia". It's just her and the piano like she does best. I really miss these kinds of songs from her. Seems to possibly be about catching her man with someone else, but secretly watching. I'm sure there's a lot more to it than that.

Fire Eater's Wife/Beauty Queen -

*An intro of an intro. But what an effective one! This would've set a completely different tone for the album. With harmonium as the primary instrument instead of the stark piano of "Beauty Queen/Horses", the song smolders and pulsates. It would've made the perfect introduction to her fire album. It's short and simple, but I love it.

Walk To Dublin (Sucker Reprise) -

*This is some hot sex right here! And she's rocking the harpsichord! omfg It's all set over a super-low, funky piano riff. Think "In the Springtime of His Voodoo" but fucking crazed. "Do a Jig!" If you're a fan, when you hear that part I swear you'll be screaming. There's a little spoken part at the end about some drinking game. Well, she sounds totally out of her mind on this one so those lyrics are appropriate. Unlike most of the b-sides from that era, this would've made a perfect addition to the album. A reminder of why "Pele" era Tori is my favorite. MEGA YUM!

Zero Point -

*This one has probably been talked about the most among fans, probably because of its legendary status as an epic on the scale of "Datura". I can see the comparisons and she really should've included it on "Venus". It's chaotic and WAY tripped out like its sister song and a few others like "Juarez". And it borrows more than a few ideas from Björk's "Army of Me". It starts out and ends with just a simple piano motif and her singing about reaching "zero ground". Apparently, there's some serious religious/scientific theory at play here, but I haven't sussed it yet. Something about Dr. Nikolai Kozyrev's studies and our cyclical experience of time. nuts Quite a strange song, but worth exploring. I'm glad it's finally out.

Not David Bowie -

*I've been highly intrigued by this song since reading about it in her book last year as Bowie is just about my favorite artist. It was a song considered for her last album "The Beekeeper" but left off for various reasons. Most seem to think that it has nothing in common with the rest of the album sonically or lyrically, but I totally disagree. It's driving, hard and confrontational which most of "The Beekeeper" is not. But vocally it shares a lot with songs like "Witness" and "Hoochie Woman". The subject matter is fitting with the themes of betrayal on that album. It would've been perfect right after "Barons of Suburbia". Many seem to think it sounds reminiscent of something off of Kate Bush's "The Dreaming". hmmm

Dolphin Song -

*Very pretty and very "Beekeeper"-ish. It works perfectly with the nautical themes and vibe of songs like "Jamaica Inn", "Martha's Foolish Ginger" and "Goodbye Pisces", all among my favorites. I don't know this song well yet, but I can tell I'm going to like it a lot, just based on the company it keeps. It's a sweet, whimsical thing.

Intro Jam to Marys of the Sea -

*Tori singing "Back that ass up!" falloff

Don't ask me how this fits with the song that follows, but it's hysterical to hear her sing those words. I was expecting something brief and maybe even instrumental. But this has words throughout and goes over 3 and a half minutes. It's really an independent song of its own. I don't know where I'd place it on the album, if at all, but it sure is entertaining.

Ode To My Clothes -

*Not sure which era this is from, but most experts seem to be in agreement that it's from "The Beekeeper", although the voice doesn't sound that new to me. It's a short little ditty that reminds me of the "Silly Songs" that she did for Pele. Just a bittersweet dedication to her old clothes that she's having a hard time getting rid of. Nothing substantial, but fun.

Take Me With You -

*Unearthed music from the "Little Earthquakes" sessions, but words and vocals done this year. It seems to be a twin song to something from that time, but I can't place it yet. And the new parts she's added to it are keeping with the sound and themes of that album. Even her voice sounds like young Tori on it. I'm glad she dug this one up and decided to do something with it because it came out very well.

All in all, I'm digging pretty much everything here. I don't normally listen to things before they're released, but I just couldn't wait this time.

I'm pretty sure all you Tori nuts are gonna love it. And there's only one more week to wait! woot!

And I must say that I'm so thrilled that a decent quality version of "Me and You" finally came out. I realize it's not on the box, but I've been listening to it with these songs and it's just gorgeous. Seriously...I could listen to this bitch sing about 'riding in circles' all day long. lol

It's quite pricey, but it seems worth it to me. I think it has a good sampling of her whole career, so it's not a bad place to start after Choirgirl.

A little more for you toriphiles, lest you not have enough to be wet over...

Tori Amos Straps on Her High Heels

Posted Sep 18th 2006 6:59PM by Jessica Robertson
Filed under: Rock

Though Tori Amos remains elusive about her new album, which she is currently finishing at her home studio in Cornwall, England, the minister’s daughter will say she’s been digging in something fierce.

“I’m in the thick of it,” Amos says of the follow-up to 2005’s ‘The Beekeeper.’ “Without giving anything away, I have my high heels on. I like the way that feels.”

As for when fans can expect the release, Amos says she’ll have “something for you to shag to by Beltane,” with an extensive tour to follow.

Meanwhile, the piano provocateur releases ‘A Piano: The Collection,’ an 86-song, five-disc set that chronicles Amos’ nearly 16-year solo career, on Sept. 26. “My goal was to try and be objective,” she says of the effort. “When you’re putting together a work of this magnitude, it has to work as a body of work now, not as individual records over the years. There’s a side of me that really forced myself to be in the producer’s chair, and that means that you have to make decisions sometimes where the emotional self has to walk out the door for a minute, because you can get attached to things for the wrong reasons.”

All of this isn’t to say she’s all work and no play. Earlier this month Amos took time away from recording to celebrate her daughter’s sixth birthday.

“We had 35 five- and six-year-olds here,” Amos recalls. “Normally, we get lucky for her parties and have halfway decent weather in England, but of course it was a torrential downpour, so the bouncy castle was soaking wet. I had to send some of the crewmen out there sliding around on towels so that the [kids] in the last 20 minutes could do their assault course before they went home soaked to their parents. You have to time it so they’re not hanging out on top of your Bosendorfer [piano] completely soaked and you’ve got two hours until their mom shows up.”

I've been trying to be oh so good about not spending exorbitant amounts of money on music. But, after listening to the first several of these songs, I will HAVE to buy this next Tuesday. I completely LOVE Zero Ground. I was driving home in total darkness along the Lake Huron listening and had to pull off to the side of the raod because it was totally trancing me out.
I so much appreciate the private preview of Me and You ~ WOW ~ eyepop
Thank you so much my friend and I'll be right on line with you next week, cash in hand. hug

Oh yes ~~~ see orgnote smile

I can store it upright with my other box sets, but I'm looking at those piano keys that stick out. It won't look so neat.
