New U2 best of; possible tracklist.

so U2 has a new best of titled "U218" coming out on Nov. 21

from atu2.com

Our friends at U2tour.de have done a little investigation and digging into the current "Hunt the Lyrics" game that U2.com is sponsoring, and based on the lyrics being used in the game, they believe the tracklist for U2 18 Singles will be:

1. Beautiful Day
2. I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For
3. Pride
4. With or Without You
5. Vertigo
6. New Year's Day
7. Mysterious Ways
8. Stuck in a Moment You Can't Get Out Of
9. Where the Streets Have No Name
10. Sweetest Thing
11. Sunday Bloody Sunday
12. One
13. Desire
14. Walk On
15. Elevation
16. Sometimes You Can't Make It On Your Own
17. The Saints Are Coming
18. Window on the Sky

It's important to note that this is not official, just an educated guess at this point. Meanwhile, U.K. retailer CD WOW has this partial track listing posted, which has one song not on the above list -- "I Will Follow."

If nothing else, all of the speculation should contribute to the ongoing debates about what should be on the album.

Is there a good video compilation DVD to go with it?

This seems totally unnecessary. And it's bad timing. I really like how they divided their first 2 'Best Of's. They should've held off until the end of the decade. And if they wanted to have a career-spanning collection, it should've been 2 discs. Whatevs. I'll still buy it. lol

they are contracted to three hits releases. i don't know if the itunes all-inclusive digital box set counted as part of that agreement. if it did, then they already fulfilled that obligation. my guess is, since they own their masters, the itunes thing was not part of that deal.

i think its too soon for another hits collection and will be sitting this one out. i'll buy the two new songs if they're available or i'll just download them from limewire if they're not.

i just hope this doesn't mean these are the songs most likely to make it on their tour closing setlist in honolulu.

I agree. It is way too soon. With this and the new Depeche Mode "Best Of...", I will simply purchase the singles or download them. I refuse to pay full price for yet another collection when all I want is two new songs.

Too many All That You Can't Leave Behind tracks for a 'Definitive' collection, and no 'Gloria', 'I Will Follow', 'Lemon', 'Staring at The Sun', 'Stay', or 'Discotheque'.

The deluxe edition comes with a DVD with about half of the Vertigo Milan show that fans have been clamoring for, so that should make this purcahse a little more worthwhile. There will also be a DVD released with the music videos to the songs on the album.

I agree that it's too soon for this release; it makes the band look greedy, and also fosters the notion that they're "over". Who releases a "Definitive singles" collection in the middle of their career? Supposedly it's all a record label decision; the band is leaving Universal/Island, and this was all that they owed the label.

However, I'm nutty at the thought of 2 new U2 songs, and will buy it the day it is released.

I think they are a little bit ashamed of that past of theirs. Should they be?

its a damn shame how they turn their back on those records. i think thier most creative and artistically successful period was 1991 - 1998. achtung, zooropa, passengers, pop, and hold me thrill me kiss me kill me.

Don't forget about 'Gloria'. It's now been missed from two greatest hits packages. It's not only one of the best songs of their early career, it's one of their best ever. Sacrilige!

It's just a 1-disc compilation aimed at very casual fans - much like The Cure did a few years back, and Depeche Mode is doing. They tack on a couple new tracks to snare the die-hards, but mostly it's for the folks looking just for the biggest hits.

When you're talking about a band like U2, with a catelogue as deep and successful as they have, it's impossible to do more than a very sparse sample on a 1-disc compilation.

if they wanted to put out a best of, they should have just re-configured "The Best Of 1990-2000" and its b-sides disc, because that entire collection is really shit from beginning to end. not that the songs are bad, but the selection of tracks on each disc is almost completely wrong-headed (let alone they felt the need to remix some of the more electronic tunes).

maybe they're entering a disco phase and are trying to catch up with Donna Summer's number of comp albums before putting out something new wink
