No, he isn't. What he is doing has been done before. The best things that he has put out was, "I used to love you". Putting new words to a song from the late 60's is not new. That "Save Room" joint is okay, but come with something original. Alicia, on the otherhand flips things and puts a classical spin on them. It also saddens me that people will accuse others of being something when all they have to go on is heresay and gossip. This is about the music and that other mess should be left outside.

Alicias biggest hit was fallen
a stolen melody from James Brown It's a Man's World
but in this day n age flat out stealing melodies and chord stractures
is being creative....

She did not steal the song...it has a similar melody with different cord changes. John on the otherhand took "Stormy" and just song over the record. There are no changes in the melody at all. To me that is stealing. What makes what he did okay and what she did not okay.

wrong

the only difference is the change of key
its the exact same song
with similar instrumentation
same chords
same melody
same song

So, if the only difference is the change in key, why is she getting all of this flack when Mr. legend lifted an entire song? Can we say, double standard?

Alicia and John are pretty much on par with each other as far as I'm concerned. They make "nice music". Both are talented and have positives and negatives within what they are doing. Neither of them are bringing anything new to the table or even being experimental. Both sing and play piano very well. They stay within the acceptable contemporary R&B lines.

Van Hunt is killin' them musically, IMO. I'm still waiting on examples of how "typical" he is.
I define typical as that joker with the song out now naming off a bunch of artists and sounding just like Usher.

I am not a john legend fan but it is nice to see an new r&b singer
blaze his own trail instead of doing the tired old crap that these
others are doing.
I did not really feel alicia keys on her first album. The first
2 singles were good but the rest of the album was pretty much
garbage to me. She scored real big on the 2nd album. It was genuine.
You don't know my name is an r&b classic and that was not even the
biggest hit on the album.
Van Hunt is the real deal but he is not being marketed properly and
it maybe because of his diversity. Is he r&b or rock?

I'm not big on john legend at all and I think "Once Again" is a very good listen. There's some dope musical moments on that record and you dont get to say that too often with modern r & b

heres the difference
Save Room is registered under copyright law as a Cover, Legend pays copyright fees and includes the names of the original songwriters, whom he pays a fee to
J.R. Cobb and Buddy Bule the original songwriters of Stormy

Fallen is registered as an original production, created solely by Alicia Keys

double standard my ass...
Legend pays fees
Alicia didn't pay fees to james brown...
the only thing that protected from copyright infringement was that
she'd played the instruments herself,
and she played the melody in arpeggio form, which is the only thing different from james version....
james had no arpeggios
but other than that it was the same melody, same chords, just different lyrics
gave james no song writing creds at all..

thats the difference...
plain and simple

Just to be clear....

Worth getting into = Van Hunt

Over-rated hype = Alicia Keys
My personal opinion. John Legend is average. I like singers who can put some emotion into a song. Someone who can make you feel what they're singing about. Like Anthony Hamilton. Now there's somebody worth getting into.

I have yet to crack the new album but check out some of the cuts on the first album - if it don't hit you, pass. I like his voice & most songs on the first album so I'm hoping to dig the second...

And Van is cool shit for those who STILL don't know cool

I am not sure about John Legend. Some of his songs I really like, i.e Ordinary People and Live it UP, but others I think are medicore. I haven't heard his new album but I do like "Save Room". Only time will tell whether he is the real deal or not.

One thing I like about him is that he actually sings a song without having some silly rap in the middle, something that is becoming a rarity these days.

Overrated. Too typical of the neo-soul genre.
