The ultimate lost gem: pick yours... Right now i am listening to the album 'Nil Lara' by the tragically overlooked Nil Lara. It was originally released in 1996 and in my opinion it is a forgotten 'classic'
For the Prince-fanatics, most songs are produced and mixed by Susan Rogers, the same Susan who produced some of Princes best records in the eighties. But that is just a side-note. What i am trying to say that this album is one of the most ignored 'masterpieces' of popular music in the last 20 years: a mixture of cuban rhythems and instruments, american rock and folk, some of the most passionate singing ever put onto cd, heartfelt, direct lyrics and purity and soul in the deliverance of both lyrics and music. 10 years since its release this album still sounds vibrant, timeless, touching. Forget about the recent releases Santana or darn Enrique Iglesias, when you admire the sounds of the afro-cuban all stars, but are also a rock-fan, Nil Lara offers the perfect mixture of cuban sounds with 'rock' as its supposed to be: raw, expressive, emotional. This record is better then anything Prince released in the nineties, you should really check it out. | |
