ok...so i'm currently listening to 20 Y.O. ( fuck Janet, couldn't you have picked a better title?) anyway..this album is really growing on me. i'm even enjoying "call on me". not a lead single but not a bad song either. this album or promotion should've never made a reference to "control". it should stand on it's own. i think it's tied with "all for you".
and "put your hands on", "all nite (don't stop)", & "r&b junkie" are what saved "damita jo" from being bottom on my list.

If edited, it probably trumps AFY. Lets re-track Damita jo so it's a GREAT and not just a GOOD album 1. Looking For Love (intro) 2. Damita Jo 3. Sexhibition 4. Strawberry Bounce 5. Put Your Hands On 6. Island Life 7. All Nite (Don't Stop) 8. R&B Junkie 9. I Want You 10.Like You Don't Love Me 11.Could This Be Love? 12.Moist 13.Spending Time With You 14.Thinking Bout My Ex 15.Outro THAT would be hot shit! "Could This Be Love?" Is that yet another outake? I did this before and made DJ a hot album for me....That's kind of it's strengh and weakness...Everyone has their favorites (and least favorites). Since I'm not sure where that list is, here is a new one. Damita Jo Looking For Love Just A Little While Damita Jo Like You Don't Love Me Moist All Nite (Don't Stop) Put Your Hands On The One/Truly Spending Time With You I'm Here Thinkin' About My Ex Slo Love Just Love Me I feel like something is missing (and I have the CD in front of me, so it might be an outake but I really never cared for "Pops Up") and my original order was probably better but this will do.

I hate All For You as an album as a whole - about 3 songs are acceptable - because it's just so juvenile. Her image, the sound, the songs. Sounds like something a bunch of 14 year old girls made up for a giggle to try and be all sex-driven and grown up. [Edited 10/26/06 1:38am]

Me Neither! I think I jumped on that bandwagon because everyone was hating it, it's not big deal. I can understand my people expected more, though. The production is a bit samey (Rockwilder didn't add all that much). I like it's passion at times and even it's anger. It is a bit too lazy at times, though, with four sex songs in a row. It's also her most pop album. Britney Spears could've recorded it (in fact, she did a few months later with "Britney"). I think I liked this side of Janet, but it could've shown a whole lot more, I guess. I ranked it higher than "RN" because to me it still sounds fresh while everything on RN seems to predictable to me at times and for an album about the state of the world and education, it feels forced at times.

Note the spaces:
1. Rhythm Nation 1814- by far her best, this is Janet's thesis statement. 2. All for You- a strong batch of fun, fresh songs after the doldrums of a painful relationship. 3. The Velvet Rope- Janet's personal statement. 4. Control- classic 80s production worthy of love. 5. 20 Y.O.- nothing groundbreaking, but solid and pleasantly short. 6. janet.- has a great album at its core, but there is a lot of fat that could have been trimmed. 7. Damita Jo- severely underrated and doomed project. 8. Janet Jackson- cute debut album with a few jams, this is definitely a throwaway. 9. Dream Street- stylistically and creatively barren. Feel free to join in the Prince Album Poll 2018! Let'a celebrate his legacy by counting down the most beloved Prince albums, as decided by you!

Her first album put her on the map as another Jackson sibling with a recording career. The lack of success of her second album could be seen as a step backward at the time. I would also rank 'All For You' higher since it yielded one of her biggest hits and kept her in the spotlight by selling modestly well. The bottom two in terms of power would be 'Damita Jo' and 'Dream Street'. It's too early to tell yet where '20 Y.O.' should rank. Too many slow cuts ruined All For You, IMO. Don't get me wrong, I love a Janet Jackson slow jam! But the album didn't have an equal amount of dance tracks. See now I interpreted power ranking as in order of significance as opposed to simply another best to worst list.

Tina has been very active. She choreographed for Ciara recently--along with Barry Lather, I think. Also, Tina choreographed for the Pussycat Dolls. "Pleasure Principle" choreographer Barry is omnipresent--in an under-the-radar at sort of way. He has choreographed for Usher, Mariah, Ciara.. everybody really. He serves more often than not as artistic director. He's choreographed for TV shows, figure skating, movies. The guy is everywhere. On-topic, my favorite Janet cd is The Velvet Rope. Also, I would agree that DJ is underrated. I wouldn't say any of her cds are bad--some just appeal more to me than others. I would definitely say that All4You, DJ, and 20 Y.O. would be ranked on the bottom tier though, with RN, Control, Janet being among the top. They are all good, but in different ways. My least favorite are Janet Jackson and Dreamstreet. [Edited 10/26/06 8:01am]

I think there were 9 or 10 winners on the album: Island Life All Nite (Don't Stop) R&B Junkie I Want You Like You Don't Love Me Thinkin' About My Ex Moist (yeah I like this one) Slo Love Just a Little While Put Your Hands On even Sexhibition and Strawberry Bounce were pretty far from terrible. If she'd cut out the pointless interludes, changed the album cover, released a different first single, and got rid of most of the lame midtempo junk, I think the album would've been received much better. We have a winner here. $$$$ post. 3 times better than the current 20.y.o Don't laugh at my funk

1. Control - Still sounds fresh, love the production, love the songs - it makes me want to move more than any other Janet album.
2. The Velvet Rope - While it may not have loads of standout tracks, i find it one of the most enjoyable albums to play from start to finish. Id also like to give a shout out to a song no one ever mentions - "empty" - i love the detached isolated vibe to this track. I listened to this album for the whole of the tail end of 1997. Got till its gone is probably her coolest track to date. 3. Rhythm Nation 1814 - Has more standout stuff than TVR, and I dont think she's ever recorded a better pop song than Escapade, but i put it below because i dont think it flows as well. All the same, i can see why many label it as her best work - i think maybe i dont appreciate the industrial funk rock sound as much as some do. 4. Janet - there isnt much between these top four albums - all have great highs. I really dig this album because it went for a different approach to RN - more chilled out, and it was when she made sex sound sensual rather than just plain filth (anytime anyplace is one horny fucking track). That said there probably isnt as much quality as on the other top albums. 5. All for You - I dont think much of any of her last 3 albums, but this has at least 4 songs i think are good. Ive hated her image since this record, and this is definitely the point where standards slipped. That said, i think its probably slated unfairly as a result. 6. Damita Jo - Its not as bad as I first thought, but its still not good either. A efw tracks are interesting, and a little clever editing and she could have had a decent record, but she retreads far too much familiar territory. All Nite, Just A Little While are still great Janet singles though. 7. Janet Jackson - I only recently heard this and i quite liked it, in a kitsch 80's sort of way. Nothing too memorable on there, pretty bland in fct, but i prefer the kitsch 80's sound to the wannabe hip, no melody programmed beat based shit she churns out now. 8. 20 YO - Just such a disappointment. "Enjoy" actually teases us showing us she can still make great songs but she decides to put out an urban record of no substance or integrity. I absolutely hate the lyrics to most of this album ("Ill open my spot for you any time you want me to" .....YUK). Janet for fucks sake just make some great pop tunes, thats all we want from you.You can do it, just hole yourself up in a studio with Jam & lewis for 6 months. 9. Dream St - Its god awful ok. Cliff Richard is on here in the most bizarre duet ever. She sound like shes about 8 as well. Not good. Has anyone noticed that all her bad albums have her smiling like a maniac on the cover. Her last three albums could have all come from the same shoot - sort of soft core cheap porn mag type stuff. The key to a good janet album is clearly to have her looking serious on the cover.
