Women ONLY make up 5% of my music collection I hired someone to catalogue my music collection and organize everything. The strange thing is that women artist only make up about 5% of my music collection. I NEVER really noticed that until now. I'm talking about 1000's of cd's and albums.
I wonder why that is? I guess women don't make good music. At least where my taste is concerned. Any thoughts?

When it comes to vocalists.....I'm slightly biased towards women. At one point women artists made up the bulk of my collection, but now I'd say it's almost equal in gender. looking for you in the woods tonight Switch FC SW-2874-2863-4789 (Rum&Coke)

Seeing that my favorite artists are overwhelmingly men, my collection is made of mostly dudes. Actually, over the last 20 years I've been buying CDs, many if not most of them are hip-hop or instrumental jazz CDs. Both male-dominated genres. Of the 700 or so I have, I'd bet only about 100 of them are female (Sade, Ella, Me'Shell, Janet, etc.) and a few dozen more include females in the group (Fleetwood Mac, The Family, Digable Planets, etc.) Good night, sweet Prince | 7 June 1958 - 21 April 2016

That's so wrong. Women make up around two thirds of my collection. If anyone follows my posts in those 'what are you listening to' threads, you'll see almost every album i have listed in there is by a woman or female fronted band.

That's interesting! I go thru periods where I listen to mostly women, though my collection is largely made up of male artists. When I cover songs in my live set, I seem to unconsciously pick songs by black women a lot.

Same here, actually. I absolutely adore Kate Bush and Bjork, but not much else as far as female artists go. Funny, I never really thought about it before. I'm an insect who dreamt he was a man and loved it. But now the dream is over and the insect is awake.

I knew this thread would piss you off. I've never tallied the gender breakdown of my collection, but I'd be amazed if women made up more than 5% of mine as well. I would never claim that men and women don't possess musical ability in equal measure, but it's definitely the case that very few women express themselves musically in a way that interests me. I don't think that should be too surprising though - I'm a guy and I think it's only reasonable that male performers would tend to resonate with me. The same thing generally holds true for me when it comes to novelists, non-fiction writers and film-makers. That's not to say I'm not interested in the things women have to say - I just generally don't care for the way they tend to say it.

One of my friends attributed my affinity for women in music to the woman inside of me trying to get out. Whatever. More likely I'm guilty of the same thing of which I accused Minneapolisgenius.

I think that my music collection is pretty mixed. But my favorites are Christina A, Freddie, and Prince. & I prefer Freddie Mercury as a singer over Mariah, Whitney, and Celine.
