pandora.com

has anyone heard of this?

the site is great! basically you type in a band/artist you already like in order to find bands/artists you may not know about who have some kind of similar quality. accurately named, you really do open up a pandora's box of musical surprises. i'm thoroughly addicted.

A friend of mine told me about it a week of so back.

I tried it out. It was nice.
However it seemed that the longer you listen, the further it strays from your initial entry.

I like the Yahoo Music better (which has been around for a while).

This comes after only 1 try of course.

I guess that's where the "possibilities" lie.

When I listened to it, it kept recommending stuff I already knew.

yahoo is too limited. they pick other performers for you to sample but only those from the same genre. pandora actually uses the technical info to gather more music for you.

when you type in a band...say, wolf parade...they'll give you new music to listen to. you can click on "guide us" and it will tell you why they chose that band for you to listen to. it might say something like, "we're playing this track because it features mixed acoustic and electric instrumentation, major key tonality, prominent organ, and many other similarities identified in the music genome project."

in other words, it gathers technical musical elements of what you like in order to cross genres and bring you stuff you may not have even thought of listening to.

brilliant! lol

Interesting. I wonder who sits there and parses all these songs.

It's turned up some pretty solid stuff, though, based on what I've plugged in.

Same here. I didn't give it much of a chance but I might now.

i think the site is a great way to see what else is out there if you're not getting exposed to new stuff.
