biggrin Ndeed, He's been kinda looming over this thread...according to Level 42's Mark King, there's an old Drummer's Joke:

" How Many drummers does it take to screw in a lightbulb?"

"Three; one to actually change the lightbulb, and the other two to talk about how Steve Gadd would've done it..."

as usual Pali Gap and TA leave but bits and pieces for me to add in face of their encyclopaedic knowledge so I'll just go ahead and give a shout out to the man I consider the grandaddy of them all: Chick Webb.

house bandleader of the savoy ballroom, often called "the real king of swing", chick was a very amazing person. Despite being stunted from childhood spinal tuberculosis which continually caused him pain and caused him to be practically a dwarf, he still was among the most incredible skin-bashers of all time. He was Gene Krupa and Buddy Rich's idol and even got Gene to admitt that he'd been "cut to ribbons" by Chick in a cutting contest between Chick's orchestra and Benny goodman's. It was said his bassdrum had to be nailed down to prevent the force of his kick from knocking it out. One couldn't even see his head under his monstrous kit and he had to use goosenecked symbols to reach them but one could see his arms flailing with incredible speed, power and timing.

Anyway some of my favorite drummers otherwise, most of whom have already been mentioned.

Mitch Mitchell
Keith Moon
Charlie Watts
Stevie Wonder
Benny Benjamin
Max Roach
Kenny Clarke
Earl Palmer
Clyde Stubblefield
Dannie Richmond (Charles Mingus)
Elvin Jones
Ian Paice (Deep Purple)
Brian Downey (Thin Lizzy)
Tiki Fulwood
Jerome Brailey
Bootsy (played a lot of drum tracks for Parliament, Funkadelic and the Rubber Band)
Tyrone McCullen (with Curtis Mayfield on Curtis/Live)
Butch Trucks and Jai Johnson (Allman Brothers Band)
Greg Errico
Andy Newmark
Bill Bruford (Yes, King Crimson)
Topper Headon (The Clash)
Papa Jo Jones (Count Basie)
Sam Woodyard
Gene Krupa
Lewis Nash
Ernie Isley, Larry Graham and Sly Stone also all learned drums before the instruments they became known for and were each quite good with them.
And ya know what I actually Dig Ringo a whole lot too. People harp on him mostly because he totally eschewed flashiness and solos, but there was a lot of subtlety and understated brilliance I think he doesn't get credit for.

I think only one person mention him, But you gotta give it up for Carter Beauford of DMB. He is amazing to watch. He makes it look so easy. He's found a way to incorporate all types of styles into his technique. Another great drummer is Zorro. He's the cat who's playing drums in Lenny Kravitz video "Let Love Rule" And he's also in "Where Are We Running?" I got one of his instruction tapes. He's awesome.

My favorite drummer is my uncle, Keith Hansen. He put himself through college playing every weekend in his own jazz band. He died in 1969 when I was two years old and I never heard him play. sigh He had that tragic drummer thing going on...
