Oh shit yeah! This is just the beginning, Tower, even though it had about 100 stores, was a MAJOR purchaser for labels, they bought new releases in "serious" bulk, which is what Soundscan tracks, its the purchasing by the chain not the consumer. Someone also told me that WalMart doesnt report to Soundscan, not sure if thats accurate but that would be funny if what "so called" retailers are left, dont even report to soundscan

just 2 weeks back bestbuy didnt report the numbers to soundscan and there was a total mess. bestbuy seems to sell quite a bit of cds

most record stores r dying becasue they cant beat the prices which bestbuy and the rest sell at a loss

Of course, this is why Labels should have set a selling price for new cds, instead of just setting a price you couldnt go over. A label will charge between 10-12 dollars a CD to stores, now if labels would have dropped that to 8-10 per store and then set standard sale prices at 11.99. This is what the Video Game Industry does, any store charging less, is fined and doesnt get gaming shipments. But of course Labels wont lower their wholesale prices, because then the higher ups cant buy their second and third homes.

Walmart does report to Soundscan...they are America's biggest music retailer these days (not kidding). If they wernt...country album sales would not be as great as they are...just check the Country Soundscan Chart...there are albums 2-3-4 even 5x Platinum...and most country albums have legs and will stay on the chart for over a year and churn out hit single after hit single...they seem to be unaffected by the downloading drama....

Tower unfortunately only accounted for less than 10% of total album sales before they sadly closed their doors.

My job was selling new releases to Tower and they really were great at setting up new releases and they will be greatly missed.

Something i think alot of people dont realize is how much SamGoody/Media Play were a big % of sales, though they werent what they were back in the day before Best Buy bought them and ruined them and then let them twist in the wind, having to shut down 80% of its stores leaving it 150, people dont realize how much of an urban supplier they were. I know this first hand since i worked with the Urban Buyer for Sam Goody, and they were very big in urban areas, worked with alot of Reggae Suppliers working independant, but once Best Buy purchased Goody a few years back, it turned them into a "top 40" store, cut their catalog, dismissed any indie suppliers and alienated everyone.
