KM: EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW!!!

Kylie scoop

Kylie-journo legend Cameron Adams has yet again gained the Kylie scoop with a stunning new interview in Australia's Herald Sun. Kylie talks in depth about her renewed confidence in her voice, tour plans and rehearsals, and most excitingly about her new material, which she describes as "making progress, developing sounds, gearing up again. I love it. I'm so happy to be back in the studio."

Showgirl must go on
Cameron Adams, Herald Sun, October 05, 2006

There's one T-shirt Kylie Minogue fans won't be able to buy as a souvenir of her Showgirl Homecoming tour. They're the shirts the singer is planning to print up for her road crew sporting the Frankie Goes to Hollywood-inspired slogan "Kylie Says Relax".

"The motto for this tour is 'We're over stress'," Minogue says. "We don't need stress. All I have to do is look at my website and that countdown sends me over the edge!"

The countdown in question is a digital clock at www.kylie.com pinpointing the exact second Minogue makes her return to the stage -- in Sydney on November 11. The comeback in question is the happy ending the world has been hoping for since Minogue was diagnosed with breast cancer in May last year, derailing the Australian leg of her Showgirl greatest hits tour. More importantly, Minogue's entire world was derailed.

She wants to keep the details of her ordeal private -- one of the few things about the life she's shared with the public for over 20 years she can keep to herself. Always a glass-half-full type, Minogue pauses when asked what positives she's taken from her illness.

"Positives? How long have you got? It's about people . . . my family, friends, my medical team . . . and how resilient we are. How you discover different layers of yourself you didn't understand in how you deal with the situation.

"It's like your world is falling down around you, and no one knows until you're in that situation how you will cope with it. And there was so much love and goodwill from my fans and the public."

She denies reports she kept a diary of her thoughts throughout her treatment.

"I didn't really write anything throughout the whole diagnosis, surgery and treatment. It was only coming out the other end of radiotherapy I started to write a little bit. I couldn't. I couldn't concentrate. Friends sent me DVD films and wondered why I never watched them. I couldn't invest that much energy in a film. I just couldn't do it. Now I've got stacks of DVDs that I'll watch one day."

During her recovery, sister Dannii would arrive at Kylie's homes in London and Paris armed with comedy DVDs -- from The Catherine Tate Show and Little Britain to Kath and Kim -- for light relief.

"Dannii was incredible," Minogue says. "She'd come over . . . I think back to how weak I was and how I was hardly present. She would pump up the iPod, put some salsa music on. Just to move was a real moment. She'd arrive with some joy."

Kylie says at the time Dannii was busy recording her own music and also becoming unofficial spokesperson for her sister every time she did an interview.

"The more I think about it, that was incredible because she was under such intense stress at the time, she was working and had everyone asking about me. It was very difficult for her. She never brought any of that to me at the time. We became closer and closer. She's amazing."

Minogue returned the favour at London's G.A.Y nightclub in June this year, surprising Dannii onstage.

"I didn't realise that was the first time people had seen me standing on stage with a microphone in my hand," Minogue says. "I just wanted to be with my sister. The ripple effect that had was quite amazing."

The appearance, with Minogue back on stage, singing, effectively pushed the button on her career comeback. Minogue admits the other side-effect of her illness was discovering a new passion for her craft, and the impact it has had on others judging by the endless flood of cards she has received from the public.

"The discovery that sounds all too obvious for me to be saying is, 'This is what I do'," Minogue says. "Performing, relating to people, communicating is what I do. I'm hoping to get back on track, but I'm even more determined than before to do it well. I feel really inspired, more than I have for quite a while."

Before her diagnosis, many around Minogue felt the Showgirl tour was shaping up to be her last live show before an extended break. She hinted as much at the time of her Ultimate Kylie compilation.

"I guess I said that without realising why I was saying it. I obviously needed to stop. Finally, I did stop."

After the longest, and most unexpected, break of her career, Minogue took "baby steps" back to music. First came trips to the recording studio. Minogue wasn't even sure she could still sing, after months of gruelling radiotherapy treatment.

"I'm pleased to say it's like riding a bike," Minogue says of her voice. "It's come back. I've been in the studio a number of times with different people."

Minogue hooked up with Jake Shears and Babydaddy of Scissor Sisters in New York, the team behind her 2004 hit I Believe In You. The New York jaunt spawned the new song White Diamond, which Minogue hints will appear in the Homecoming tour.

"It's glorious," Minogue says of the song. "It's another track you'd expect from Jake, Babydaddy and I. It's a big, shiny, raising-the-arms-in-the-air moment. We're dying to get back in the studio together again.

"Jake is the greatest," Minogue says. "The last thing he said to me was 'We should dress up in each other's clothes!' because we're so alike in so many ways."

Minogue is coy when asked whether White Diamond is, as rumoured, a metaphor for strength and resilience, written during her recovery.

"There are metaphors in there," she says. "We all wanted to write something about that moment. Not that moment, not the difficult moment, but the moment when we were writing it."

The singer does confirm she has written songs about her ordeal.

"I've done a couple of other songs in which I said what I wanted to say, even if they never end up on an album, so I've got some of that stuff out of my system."

After the urban diversion of her last album Body Language, Minogue says her new material returns to her trademark pop.

"It's sexy pop. Unashamed. And some of the songs will go down the Slow road, trying to be effective but minimalist. I have demos of songs in both those styles so far. We've done quite a lot, we're letting them sit and see what we still like after a few months."

Minogue will return to the studio after the return UK leg of her tour in January.

"No one's in a rush to do a whole album now. We're making progress, developing sounds, gearing up again. I love it. I'm so happy to be back in the studio."

It wasn't just recording that kept Minogue busy during her recovery; the singer worked on an array of projects.

"It's such an important part of recovery to get on and do what you do and be who you are," she says. "I'm sure I'm going to look back on this period and go 'How on earth did I do that?' I'm not a year out of recovery and I'm recording and doing photo shoots and we've filmed new stuff for the screens for the show.

"I've hardly stopped. Not to panic people that I'm overdoing it, but I've been doing quite a lot. I'm trying to build up my strength."

Away from music, there's the children's book The Showgirl Princess and her perfume Darling.

"I've been working on that for about three years," Minogue says of her fragrance, to be launched in Australia in November. "That coming out will be a fulfilling moment for me. Suffice to say there were months and months where I could not do anything, but I must have been thinking in the back of my mind about doing these things. Now I get to see a lot of them through. They all seem to be happening at once."

However, it's the return to the stage that is Minogue's immediate focus. Initially she was planning to tweak her Showgirl tour -- which had already toured the UK and Europe -- for Australia. However, Minogue's creative team -- William Baker and Steve Anderson -- have dramatically reworked the show.

"It's revamped. Partly through necessity, majorly because we want to. That's what we do. We try not to make two TV appearances exactly the same so I'm not going to make the biggest tour of my life the same. It just can't be the same. If I was to be in the same costumes doing exactly the same thing it would feel wrong to me. I'm in a different space."

Minogue starts rehearsals for the show in London this month; the first test of her new health will deal with her old regimen.

"I've yet to discover how the performance will be like, how I'll feel, how I'll perform. Obviously I was unknowingly performing under some strain last time. The only thing I'm not sure about is the stamina of doing a show, but we'll see. I'm keen to get into rehearsals. There's another level to decisions to be made after that, another level of thought and physicality for me. Until rehearsals I can't really measure how I'm doing. Everyone's fully aware if I have to adapt things further, even at that stage, we'll do it."

The excitement of best friends Minogue and Baker reigniting their creative partnership -- which briefly ended during Showgirl -- is palpable.

"We've remarried," she jokes.

Baker has styled Minogue for a series of photo shoots, including her new calendar. Baker told a UK paper recently "I didn't want everybody to think of her as a cancer survivor. I wanted people to remember how she is -- strong and sexy."

Minogue serves up an anecdote when asked about the quote.

"As I'm slowly starting to feel better about myself, feel more like myself he said to me 'Dear, I'm glad to see you back in foxy jeans. You are a fox! Enough of these baggy to-the-floor dresses!' As a friend he's trying to get me to get my confidence back."

Minogue, Baker and Anderson have also adapted the tour's hit-heavy setlist.

"Our tendency is to keep putting songs in, which makes the show longer," Minogue says. "The desired effect is to make it a little easier on me. But we have not stopped thinking about it since I gave (manager) Terry (Blamey) the go-ahead to say 'Yep, we're doing this'."

Minogue has visions for the new tour that extend beyond the sequins and glitter of the original Showgirl jaunt.

"It won't necessarily be bigger. Bigger doesn't necessarily mean better, it's just going to be evolved. If Showgirl was a teenager, Homecoming is a lady."

The show will have all-new costumes (John Galliano, Bodymap, William Baker, Dolce & Gabbana, Karl Lagerfeld for Chanel and Matthew Williamson for Pucci) and Minogue denies internet rumours she'll sport wigs for her return.

"It'll be too hot. Plus it would seem wrong to create the illusion I am the way I was before. I've had such good responses to short hair and there's not too much I can do about that at the moment. I want to feel light and free. I want this to be a tour that is an expression of joy for a start. I want to incorporate a bit of what I did years ago with Impossible Princess, where alongside the sparkle and glitz I'm hoping we can incorporate part of the show that's a little deeper than that."

Minogue's illness demonstrated the loyalty felt not only by fans who held on to their tickets, but by her road crew -- who remain almost unchanged to a person.

"When I was diagnosed and in those months when no one really knew what was going to happen, my tour manager told me the crew had to go and take other jobs, but only on the provision that if they got the call that my tour was back on, they could get out of their other jobs. There's so much devotion. I'm sure I'm going to see these big burly crew members who have seen it all and done it all with maybe a little tear in their eyes."

The emotion surrounding Minogue's comeback has crept into her subconscious.

"I dreamt I arrived at a soundcheck and I ran to the backing singers and hugged them and everyone was in tears. I had dinner with a friend who was asking me 'What is that moment going to be like?'," Minogue says of her return to the stage. "I think about it often. I simply can't come up with the answer though. It will be what it will be. I might be the only one who keeps it together, who knows?"

Nice interview.
"When Michael Jackson is just singing and dancing, you just think this is an astonishing talent. And he has had this astounding talent all his life, but we want him to be floored as well. We really donĀ“t like the idea that he could have it all."
