I prefer Nasty Girl over In my House but I like In my House over Sex Shooter.
MJGs were clearly more talented but Nasty Girl was the cut. Sex Shooter was trying to be Nasty Girl....

I agree that Candy Man is a better track than In My House. That said...I agree with lilgish; In My House is better than anything from Vanity 6 or Apollonia 6. Nasty Girl is hot and I looooove Drive Me Wild, but I prefer Rick's production in this area. His hoes were better.

Put me on a desert island with that three-track 12" and I wouldn't complain. Having said that, I still like "Nasty Girl" more. On my list of favorite songs of all time, it's at #15 vs. "Candy Man" at #23.

That laid back but funky beat of All Night Long that's drowning in that funk-fried bass and sexy flute makes even this straight-edged dude wanna get high on the dancefloor. sextonseven said: Perhaps. However, if you included Vanity 6, then the answer would be no. "Nasty Girl" wipes the floor with "In My House".
.....and Prince was a better synth player than Rick James. EDIT: But Rick James was no synthpussy by any means. I still believe that Cold-Blooded & 17 were Rick's best work on synths! [Edited 10/3/06 18:15pm]

I think the song that you should bring up (and others already have) is "All Night Long"...That song is still the shit (Rick's bassline is so smooth that it's ridiculous...) That said, "Nasty Girl" is a tough song to follow...The percussion track is groundbreaking... [Edited 10/3/06 21:44pm]

I love that song "If You Should Ever Be Lonely!" If she was a Bride of Funkenstien, she has a connection to Sheila, since Lynn was also one of the Brides. What do you mean she is now in 1 of the MJG camps? Are they performing? How can I get info on them???

You know back in the day, there was a local Video show on Friday nights (a pre-cusor to Friday Night Videos) hosted by Carlos De Jesus from WKTU and later by Debbie "Angie" organ and Darnell "Jesse" wiliams from All My Chidren. Anyway, the MJGs were on and Carlos was like "where are you all from"? and Cherie said "East Brunswick New Jersey" and my brother and I fell off the couch, cuz that is where we lived!!!

GaryMF said: the only real "vocalist" in MJGs was Jo-Jo. I don't think the other girls ever really sing.WHen I lived in Chicago they had a DJ on the black station that was doing gossip and said that basically, the Waters sisters did all the real singing for the Mary Jane Girls. They are credited on as BG signers on songs like "Shadow Lover" and also appear on Teena Marie songs "WHere's California".I always wondered if Jo JO was actually singing too.
I've seen the Mary Jane Girls in concert several times, and I can tell you that all of them are actually singing. They weren't lip-synching at all.All four girls are real singers. On the first album, they even share lead vocals.JoJo sings lead on most songs, but "Prove It" features one of the other girls on lead vocals, and Cheri handles the lead vocals on "Jealousy" (interesting trivia: in 1984,Cheri left the group and she auditioned to be in Shalamar, which was looking for a new female singer to replace the departing Jody Watley).Interestingly,Cheri's replacement,Corvette, later sued Paula Abdul, claiming that it was her vocals, not Paula's,that were prominent on the 'Forever Your Girl' album. So,yeah,Rick's girls were real singers.

I heard the 12' of In My House over the weekend, and thats where my vote goes. THe section where its just drum and bass, and then the keys come in and out of the mix was killin me! Nasty Girl is the truth too. Dont get me wrong, but Rick nailed it w/that one. A happy face, A Thumpin Bass, For A Lovin' Race. PEACE.

Slave has a few camps .
Mark " The Hansolor " Adams performed with his own formation sometime ago . Now you have quite a half-official group on www.slavefamilyoffunk.com . And Mark "Drac" Hicks is releasing recordings and a live-dvd with "his" own Slave on www.thefunkstore.com . Then there was the Slave Hall Of Fame ( mentioned above ) with ex-Slave warrior & Aurra-producer/musician Steve "The Fearless Leader" Washington . Seems that business or ego might be the case Even George Johnson had his own Brothers Johnson band & site for a while . ( I still have a print-out of it ) George & Louis is a continuous war ... a friend of mine spoke to him last August on a soulfest . George's name couldn't be mentioned . . . . Not how i experienced it . Maybe he nailed it commercially . IMO , MJG's "Boys" is even rawer than "In My House" , it nails "in My House" funkwise by miles . It's too bad that in V6 their "If A Girl Answers , Don't Hang Up" is mainly talking ... in the end there's some chorus . But that track was meant for the fun ... nevertheless , it's music is nastay raw uplifting grinding funk .
