The truth of the matter is if you heard some of the songs you like
buy it. If you don't like it don't buy it, it's that simple. I admit
i have only heard 3 songs from it including the first 2 singles.
Call on me sounds like a track mariah carey rejected from MIMI but
so excited sounds fresh enough for me to buy it. I am sure there
are at least a few other good tracks on it.
Hell i haven't listened to her self titled album Janet in years. It
just collecting dust in my cd collection because i considered that
to be her weakest cd from control up to damita jo. I know there are
others who will disagree but the Janet album did not do anything for
me so i figure 20 Y.O can't be much worse at best.
Don't laugh at my funk
This funk is a serious joint

there's a few good tracks. in my haste i overlooked daybreak...add that to the list of good songs along with enjoy, with u, and this body. love 2 love isn't too bad as background music either. i think this cd will be (to me) janet's "music" cd. it took me years to like madonna's "music" and even now i rarely listen to the whole thing. originally i liked three songs, now i like about 6. we'll see. i'm still waiting it out to see if any of these songs get stuck in my head from the bet stream.

i don't know which one that is. i'm guessing that means i didn't care for it. the ones i liked are those which i know the titles of.

lol It's the next to last track. Slow tune, slightly reminiscent of Come Back to Me or The Body That Loves You.

i've heard nothing that comes close to even reminding me of classics like come back to me or the body that loves you.

That's my issue though. This album is littered with tracks that are "like" something she has done, only those tracks are superior. So what's the point if you can just go back and listen to those tracks. Janet has yet to venture somewhere new.

Okay I bought it, and got Damita Jo since they had it on special today. lol
They had bargins on all Janet's albums but I already had most of them.

It's a huge Janebration. lol

Have in mind that some orgers don't respect the opinion of others, and consider others inferiors because of their musical taste....

It's not about respecting people's opinions it's about realising that 80% of reviewers have their hands tied when writing. As has been pointed out already, this site has given rave reviews to Cassie and Paris Hilton's albums as well. You don't need a degree in media studies to be able to smell bullshit.

I think Cassie has been getting rave to good reviews every where. Maybe it's really a good disc!

Oh no it was the regular version, (is there a SE?) I always intended to buy it at one point but it's always so fucking expensive here in Canada. I'm always seeing it over 20.00 and I don't think any cd is worth that now in days, especially a disappointment like this one.
But at 7.99 I grabbed it cause i did like segments of it.

You confirmed my point. 80% of reviewers lie. Have you ever wondered why every poster you see advertising any film, no matter how crap, will be filled with quotes from critics saying it's the film of the year? Tell me you've noticed this. It's people passively tolerating this bullshit, or being blind to it, that's got our culture into the swamp it's in, but this is the wrong place for that discussion so I'll leave it.

Doesn't that "Enjoy" song sound just like MJ's "Butterfly"?

I think Allmusic is the only site I see as one that seems kind of strange with their reviews of pop music (often too high or too low) but I think most critcs reveal in trashing a CD. I don't think hands are tied.

AMG's review platform - though wonky - makes sense to me, especially with artists that have larger catalogues. They rank albums within their respective genres and based on previous releases. I rarely put much in their actual star ratings and pay more attention to the text of the review.

No, I thought you were sayiing there was a special edition of DJ. No, despite numerous reissues of "All For You" (one clean verison with a bonus DVD in Nov 2001 and one with a tacked on "SOAG" remix the following spring), Dj never got that treatment. I think that speaks volumes about how the album was treated after the intial release.

I think of it more as "All For You Part 2", just not as good. "All For You" was a pretty consisent album (good or bad) with a similar sound for the most part. Nothing was that off the wall. "Damita Jo", with good, not bad and "God damn, that's ugly". I liked AFY but right now, I'm not liking "20 YO" as much. It doesn't have huge highlights (althogh I think "Enjoy" is the best track) but nothing stinks like it did on "Damita Jo", either. I still have a lot to say about the album...it might take days!

You could have fooled me. I still remember the reviews I read for Madonna's American Life. An awful album that was largely given very positive reviews. Even with Bob Dylan, one of my favourite artists, he's been getting 5 star reviews from Rolling Stone and the rest for Modern Times. It's a really good album, but the reviews are more a reflection of his current standing than the actual content of the album. Yes, they love trashing CDs, but only if they're given permission first.

I think Madonna got a pass for taking a chance. Overall, I doubt reviews for AL where glowing. Bob Dylan is Bob Dylan and they have to love him!

Well I bought 20 Y. O. today, and my "review" is that I like it. I don't love it, but I don't hate it.

To me it'a quite different. It's very ... I don't know exactly what style..It sounds sort of like techno-urban (??) to me. eek lol lol My favorite track thus far is "Enjoy" to me a more traditional Janet track. And I'm really started to like "So Excited."

It's the type of cd that will probably grow on me. It's not a "serious" like The Velvet Rope. And it's not really like All4You or Damita Jo either. I can't really rank it or compare it to the others at this point because I don't have a grasp of it quite yet. Didn't I read somewhere that Janet was really impressed with Depeche Mode and was trying to use that style in this CD? Did ya'll read that anywhere?

It's not the hard-hitting dance cd I expected, but there are some sort of groove tracks that I can get into. I'm not disappointed, but I'm not jumping up and down either. It's not bad. I don't regret buying it.. and I think after a few listens I might even like it a bit more.

I can't get a full review until I listen one more time but I think I'm with you. I like it, but don't love it. Nothing sticks out as great ("Enjoy" comes close....the first real R&B I've heard from her in a while!) but nothing is a total stinker either.

I think the most telling thing about the album is the intro. Anyone notice how she says this album is going to be light...and then says "I know" (as in she heard the fans groan!). Come one Janet....you have nothing to say again. I'll give her that AFY was a breakup album, but what the hell was "Damita Jo"? It certainly didn't show her personality, did it?

I don't know. It's hip to diss Janet. wink

I quite like the new album as well. I may like it more than janet. and definitely like it better than her first 2 albums and Damita Jo.

Same thing it is with All for You I guess.

I think janet. has a great album at its core. It just didn't trip the fat, so to speak.

By the way, have you gotten the new Janet yet?

"With U" is the sexiest Janet ballad in a LONG time. "Enjoy" is utterly jubilant, as you said it would be. You may actually think this one's ok.
