I'd throw Control in there too, but it doesn't do much for me anymore.

I didn't know you were even a fan.

I am a casual admirer. She is not an artist I'ld go completist on. You named the three albums I actually own. This latest album does not have staying power. It is slightly fun, but it all just mumbles along.

Sas was dead-on when using the word 'generic'. I mean, I just heard it once. I will give it another spin now...

You know, it is like a marriage. She and Jam/Lewis have been together too long.

She needs new producers, mate. People telling her 'this is too blend, Jackson. What about THIS' (insert N.E.R.D. here)

I think that's the problem though. She got new producers. Her stuff was much more consistent when she was strictly Jam & Lewis.

JD and Kanye and everyone else are who's dumbing her down.

(ok, i'm just copying and pasting from another thread on the same topic cuz i didn't know this one was here.)

after listening to all 13 tracks including the bonus tracks BET was so kind to include, i like only 3 songs. I'm diggin' "this body"...its pretty hot. i'm also really enjoying "with u." the first time i heard a clip of that i was not impressed but i actually really like the track. i LOVELOVELOVE "enjoy!" i think "enjoy" is one of her best songs in a long, long time.

sadly, that's it. all of the other songs either sound to generic for me to really care about them or i just flat out dislike them. the first four songs are simply ok. typical, run of the mill, generic rnb tracks. actually, excluding the three songs i mentioned by title, the whole album is mediocre at best. and i think i'm being generous in that assessment.

i know the janet brigade is gonna roll up in here and tell me how much i suck and how much this record is the best in her career and blah blah puke. i'm ok with that. i hope the majority of her longtime fans don't fall in line with my opinion of the record. personally, janet has been my favorite female pop star since...oh, i don't know...forever. i'm incredibly disappointed. i hear JD all over this piece of generic crap cd and very little janet.

on one hand i hope the record sells well so nipplegate can be securely behind us and the media can move on. on the other hand i hope it tanks and janet figures out that the majority of the public like her because she's janet and not because she can do what all the other poptart du jours are doing. by the way, if this is her attempt at proving she can do that flava, she hasn't proven anything. personally, i think the record is lame. the only good tracks are those where janet does janet. this should tell her something.

yeah, i'm salty. i loved damita jo and because of poor record sales and a bit of controversy she and virgin abandoned it. she neglected to do a tour to support the record and instead she went in the studio...and made this steaming pile of hot shit. thanks, j.

well, at least one good thing came from all of this. i was able to hear the record before buying it and now i can save 10 bucks by just buying the three tracks i like from itunes. i was hoping beyond hope it wouldn't come to that. i thought it might, but i truly was hoping it wouldn't.

As part of the Janet brigade (lol), I appreciate both the positive and negative comments. I still haven't heard the whole cd, and I'm just going to wait until next week.

To tell you the truth, I have a little Damita Jo resentment. I also really loved that cd and was all hyped for the tour. So when it was cancelled, I was extremely disappointed, but I understand her reasoning: there was just too much negative, period. It seemed no matter what she did during the DJ era, something bad happened or was said. I even remember seeing this video where Janet trip up the stairs during the Wango Tango performance. During the BET awards, I remember that long scarf getting wrapped around her neck to where she had difficulty getting it loose in the wind tunnel. Just all kinds of stuff from the fans, to the critics, to some of the performances was just really negative.

So I, like you, am just happy that people seem to be really liking this cd, even though there are some who still don't. And maybe--just maybe the SB stuff will be a thing of the past--not that Janet is going to ever give-up being overtly sexual because I just think that's the way she is. Actually, it would more disingenuous of her to try to do something just to please all of her critics because I'm sure she's has read all of the remarks about people being bored with her breasts and her music. That said, 20 Y. O. may have been more of a creative stretch than a lot of people are giving her credit for- moving a little more closer to Urban. From what I've read, I think this is Janet's version of Confession of a Dance Floor in a sense except her idea of dance music is more urban-pop than electronic-pop. I don't think Janet will ever do an electronica cd or middle of the road electronica like Madonna's Confessions... I don't particular enjoy electronica anyway , so I'm not too disappointed about that although I'm rediscovering and enjoying the more moderate Confessions... .. However, Janet might move into more of jazz or even a urban vibe. Oh... also another fan mentioned to me that 20 Y.O. is also closer to "chill-out" house music--the type that's played in number of music lounges in California?

Whatever the case, I'm really happy that a number of you enjoy the cd. Now I'm really excited about it. excited

played 20 Y.O as background music this afternoon at work. I really like it. IMHO Janets best moment is Velvet Rope. Im by no means a big time fan, and sure as hell no member of any Janet Brigade, but this is alright. I dont know if I'd still have the same opinion of it if the music was in the foreground( not at work, vacuuming or some other mindless task to divert my attention) but for right now, this is a cool album. I dont expect much from her lyrically. Maybe my expectations were so low(rock bottom) that anything was bound to exceed them. I dunno.

That is my absolute favorite Janet song too, and a permanent resident of my all-time top 10 songs. However, highlight as "This Time" may be, I think the album is weighed down too much with crap like "The Body That Loves You", "What'll I Do", etc.

Co-sign. Not to mention a pointless interlude before practically every song? It's just not her best album, and thematically, out of her Big Four, it's possibly her weakest.

Agreed; this is definitely her weakest album since 1984.

Rhythm Nation 1814
Velvet Rope
Janet
Control

-drop in quality control-

Damita Jo

-another break in quality control-

All For You

-disappears up own ass-

20 Y.O.

It's like she forgot to write hooks, choruses, and melodies this time around. Pretty much every song revolves around a weak loop; once you've heard the first 10 seconds of the songs, you've heard all they have to offer. Janet's singing has never sounded this poor before. Shall I go on? It's not that the songs are all unspeakably awful, but they're just so overwhelmingly mediocre. It's like an album made up of 'The Body that Loves You', 'Because of Love', 'Anything', 'The One', 'Spending Time With You', and 'Truth', with 'He Doesn't Even Know I'm Alive' as the best song on the CD.

Seriously.

But then forget about those songs, because they at least had decent production, and passable vocals, which 90% of these songs can't brag.

I do like 'Daybreak', though.

I also found her voice annoying on this album. I’m not sure why though. Is she singing any different than she has before?

The one song I sorta dug, Do It 2 Me I played a few times only to find it monotonous. It feels like something else should happen during the song but nothing does. It’s just redundant and God only knows what she’s saying.

Your description of the album is dead on. I’m sorta surprised this is the final product especially after all of JD’s bragging.
Been gone for a minute, now I'm back with the jump off
