Hendrix Tops List Of Greatest Guitar Solos Gilmour, Knopfler, Page Follow Rocker On List
POSTED: 1:58 pm CDT September 8, 2006 UPDATED: 2:45 pm CDT September 8, 2006 NEW YORK -- When it comes to great guitar solos, Guitar One magazine said Jimi Hendrix tops the list According to the magazine, Hendrix's solo on "Machine Gun" is No. 1 on its list of the 101 Greatest Guitar Solos of All Time. The magazine said Hendrix "can conjure the sound and fury of war -- bombs, guns, diving fighter jets, showers of ammo -- in a single three-and-half minute guitar solo." It beats out David Gilmour on Pink Floyd's "Comfortably Numb," which the magazine described as "not overrated, simply transcendent." Mark Knopfler's solo on "Sultans of Swing" by Dire Straits is third, followed by Jimmy Page on Led Zeppelin's "Stairway to Heaven." Hendrix comes back to take fifth place, for "All Along the Watchtower." Just making the list at 101 is Brad Gillis, on Night Ranger's "Sister Christian." Guitar One's guitar solo issue comes out Sept. 19. ![]() ![]()

![]() ![]() Just glancing at the listings on here, it was half standard, half surprising. Comfortably Numb shocked me. Have to look more closely at this list. "Knowledge is preferable to ignorance. I wish that somehow, "Hope You Feel Better Love" by the Isley's made the list...That being said, Guitar One is an excellent magazine and the only one I still check out on a regular basis. My author page: https://www.amazon.com/au...eretttruth

I like what Pete Townshend (I think) said about Jimi on one of the many documentaries about him: "Jimi's was like an alchemist..." and then went on to say how he took this instrument and the sound and turned into something much more magical and brilliant than it originally was.
I had a friend at a job I was working at once, and when she came in my office when I was playing some Jimi on my CD player, she was like, "oh, he's too heavy metal for me!" How can someone hear heavy metal from him? I wouldn't even classify his music in any genre. I think he liked to call himself as a bluesman, but to me, he's in a genre all by himself.

Slash has done some good musical solos--he kind of ignored the 80's. I really like the one he does on Lenny Kravitz' Fields of Joy.
Bottisatva (sp?) by Steely Dan is one of my favorite guitar songs Something by the Beatles is one of my favorite melodic solos. Kurt Cobain is often overrated, but sometimes underrated in the way he could bust out a short solo that sounds like noise initially, but was actually something very creative & musical--try In Bloom. Worst solo ever? I'll Follow the Sun--The Beatles My Legacy
